Which came first the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great or St John Chrysostom?

Why is the St John’s Liturgy used primarily with St Basil’s used only during certain times of the year?

Any links or info on the histories of these two Divine Liturgies will be apppreciated.

St. Basil revised what was in current use, that probably having been St. James’ liturgy with accretions, codifying it.

St. John condensed and streamlined St. Basil’s liturgy.

OK.
But does anyone know why St John revised and shortened it?
Was it requested or did he do it unilaterally?

LITURGIES St. John Zlatouct and Vasiliy the Great

Of course it is wrong to believe that we have definite information on such. There is even no written documentation of these liturgies until 8th century the oldest being Sapfir Sinaiskij of Blessed St. Porfiriy Uspenski. What we know is from traditional writings later than these two Hierarchs for whom lilturgies named. We have witness of Prokl of Constantinople and St. Amfilokhiy Ikoniyckiy people somewhat close to the time that lived these Saints. These say that Saint Vasiliy the Great shortened the existing until his time liturgy of Saint Apostle James not because he believed it too long but as a lienience to the believers, their weakness and inattentiveness to the celebrated liturgical Sacrifice. By the witness of St. Amfilokhiy St. Basil then composed liturgy in own words. Coming from same reasons, St. Ioann Zlatoust shortened liturgy again.

The basic parts of liturgical Anafora were ancient - the introduction, Trise Holy, Anamnesis, Epiclesis and Intercession . Before these fathers were many examples of ancient anafora. Therefore, they did not completely anew re-write the Liturgy. They composed in the type of ancients new prayers for eucharistic kanon. without dispute - all scholars are agreeing - the central part of liturgy is the work of their hands.

And in actual fact, the only thing St John Chrysostom shortened in the DL of St Basil were the prayers of the priest - not the prayers of the people, litanies etc.

A good point in all this is that the earlier one goes back to the original times of the early Church, the longer the liturgies one finds. The Novus Ordo was “marketed” if one may use that term, on the basis of the idea that the early Church began with short, simple liturgies that lengthened over time with “unnecessary accretions.” Thus, the NO was “returning” to the more ancient practice.

Nothing could be further from the truth, however.
