St. Basil's Bread

Anybody got a great recipe for St. Basil’s Bread (aka Vassilopeta)?

Mine just never seems to come out right – too heavy, too doughy in the center, etc. Sort of bland in taste. No the treat it’s supposed to be.

Not sure if this belongs in Water Cooler, but I figured that here, folks would know what Vassilopeta is. . . Help! Planning on baking the same old, same old tomorrow unless I get some better advice before I get started.

Why is a coin placed in the dough?

Why is a coin placed in the dough?

As in the very many cultures with a similar practice of including a coin in certain festive breads or cakes, the person who receives the coin in his or her piece of the treat is supposed to have good luck in the New Year.
