I chose St. Elizabeth of Hungary as my patron saint for Confirmation back in the 4th grade (42 years ago?!). My reason at the time was because my grandfather was from Hungary, and I liked the story of the bread being changed into roses.
Since then I had felt little connection to this saint, and sometimes wondered why I had chosen her (I never bothered to read an extensive biography). But then several years ago I found Ferdinand Holbock’s book Married Saints and Blesseds Through the Centuries (Ignatius Press) which has a chapter on Elizabeth. Then I realized why I had chosen her (or perhaps why she had chosen me?). It has to do with my vocation as a married woman. Quoting biographer W. Nigg, the book says that “She [Elizabeth] lived her married life affectionately, with every fiber of her being, and revealed to her husband a sweet womanly charm full of tenderness.”
Elizabeth and her husband truly understood the vocation of marriage and put God at the center of their lives. That is something that I (and all of us who are married) can try to imitate. And after her husband’s tragic death, Elizabeth continued to pour herself out in giving her time and worldly possessions to the sick and the poor.
