This is probably the wrong spot for this question but I can’t think of a better spot for it.

Is Eutychus, the man who fell asleep and fell to his death when Paul was preaching (Acts 20) considered to be a saint? I checked the on-line Catholic Encyclopedia but there’s no article for him. If so, how do I start a campaign to get him assigned as the patron saint of those of us with sleep disorders?

You know, that’s very curious. Most New Testament figures have a saint’s day somewhere in the calendar, but every Eutychus, Eutychius, and Eutychian that I can find in the Western church’s more prominent calendars is well after our guy. This doesn’t mean there isn’t a calendar or martyrology that does include him; it just means I didn’t find it after any quick search. I’ll look about.

The Coptic church celebrates “The Departure (death) of John’s Disciple Eutychus” on September 6 (Nasie 1), and they note that this Eutychus is generally associated with our guy. These memories of feasts usually are accepted between churches for ancient stuff.

Re: patronages — They don’t usually assign these things officially at the Vatican, frankly. If the faithful want to say somebody is good with some kind of problem, that’s the faithful’s business. “Official” centralized patronages are only pronounced for special catechetical reasons.

The way to get St. Eutychus associated with sleep disorder patronage is to pray for his intercession, see how it goes and if God favors your devotion, and encourage other people to do the same. You could found a St Eutychus club, run charities in his name, and so forth. Make holy cards and get your archbishop to approve them.

Thanks, Mintaka. I was a bit surprised that there was not even an article about him in the Catholic Encyclopedia. I know we don’t have much info on him but there are saints we know even less about.

Now that you bring it up:

I have a hard time falling asleep, hard time sleeping more than three or four hours at a time, and possibly related to that, I’m very sensitive to caffeine or its chemical derivatives.

That sounds like my daughter.

I have the opposite problem. Apnea is when a fold of skin in your throat causes you to stop breathing while you sleep. When this happens, I wake up. The trouble is that it happens almost once a minute meaning I never get a good sleep. I’m always tired and must be doing something to prevent falling asleep. I can’t drive in the country because the monotony puts me to sleep.
