One of the greatest and most loved of all the saints. When my life gets most difficult I often turn to accounts in his life and how he dealt with them for inspiration. But it is like entering another world. medieval Christian Italy. There is something romantic about that… But for him is was a reality just as we face each day. I would like to hear others reflect on his life and the many stories as told by Celano and Bonaventure and other early sources.

I am currently reading Bonaventure’s* Life of Francis* I am still in his conversion period and it reminds my of when I first began to take an interest in Francis. I was about 23 and though I just graduated from college with a degree in accounting, I in no way desired nor felt ready to go into business. The spirit was being born in my and so I greatly identified with Francis in his transformative years seeking new direction, understood by no one but God.

Now, almost 40 years later, I still turn to him to rekindle the inner flame that sometimes dims.

St Francis was the one who led me toward contemplative practice back in 1976.

I was in the Charismatic movement in my parish, but as soon as I began to read Fr Murray Bodo’s book, “Francis: The Journey and the Dream,” I was immediately drawn toward interior prayer.

Ironically, when my wife and myself first looked into 3rd orders, we tried to join a Franciscan group, but they had disbanded. In our search, the Lord Jesus led us to the Secular Order, Discalced Carmelites. OCDS. We joined that group and grew in contemplative prayer together. We made our vows together back in 2000.

Assisi is a beautiful place. I am lucky enough to spend half the year in Italy and have visited it. I recall the heat walking up the hill to the Basilica. It was overpowering that day, but so wonderful to see it all.
