I want to write a children’s book on St. Francis of Assissi, but I don’t know anything about him. The Catholic Encyclopedia only gives me so much information. So I was wondering if anyone out there in CAFland could tell me about this amazing saint’s life?
 
Buy St. Bonaventure’s ‘Life of’ St. Francis. 🙂 By a saint, about a saint, doesn’t get better than that…

It’ll take some work to change a strong wine like that into a child’s book if you do tho, be a good task. 🙂

I’m curious. How well do you think you can write a book about someone you nothing about?
Also there are already lots of children’s books on St Francis of Assisi. Google and you will find them.

My favorite part of St. Francis’s story is the description of his reception of the stigmata.

Ah, but it’s hard to repeat words like that, they’re almost too holy to be spoken or written. Let the person who dares to read it, read it.

First you have to decide if you want to write a biography of our holy father Francis or a simplified theological work that children can understand.

If you want a biography, the best place to go to is the early Franciscan writers like Thomas of Celano and Brother Juniper. Their biographies are simpler than Bonaventure’s. Bonaventure’s biography is more scholarly. The Little Flowers St. Francis has many short stories that are interesting and colorful for chidlren.

If you want to write Franciscan theology in a simple manner that children can understand, get a book called The Disciple and the Master: St. Bonaventur’s Sermons onf St. Francis of Assisi by Eric Doyle, OFM.

Another good book on Francican theology is Francis and Clare: The Complete Writins by Regis Armstrng, OFM Cap et all.

There is another called, Brother Francis of Assisi by Ignacio Larañaga, SJ.

These will help you learn more about your subject. The theological works focus more on Francis’ soul and his inner life, rather than on his outer life. They stress those virtues that were not visible to the naked eye, but became visible after his death by watching the growth of his spiritual patrimony.
