St. Ignatius not Doctor of the Church

Just wondering why St. Ignatius of Loyola has not yet been named a Doctor of the Church. His Spiritual Exercises were of great help to me even when I was just discerning the call to Catholicism. I was shocked to find that he was not named a doctor of the Church. Thoughts?

Do you think that now that we have a Jesuit Pope, St Ignatius will finally be given the honor?

I was told by a very old Jesuit priest that I would never see a Jesuit priests in my lifetime,I truly believe that was because that Catholic Church wanted to lead more by rules than by Christ like examples. I think that we should all feel blessed that those in power selected a Jesuit to guide the Church today. Someone that has common sense and understanding of the world today.

He might be eventually. Some Doctors of the Church didn’t receive that status for over a thousand years. St. Ephrem, my patron saint, lived in the 4th century, before St. Augustine, and he was declared a Doctor in 1920.

I cannot begin to express how life changing I have found St Ignatius spiritual exercises to be for me. I pray that he is named to be a doctor of the church. How many times I pray in the morning and then go to work and treat God like a television I turn on and off. Lord please forgive me. My heart is now open and through examen, I can discern the reality that God is everywhere at all times. What a grace, comfort, and joy and love.

I think St. Teresa, the little flower, was a doctor because so many benefited from her simple spiritual way. I don’t see that in St. Ignatius, he is anything but simple and tho he may be somewhat popular among religious, he is somewhat complicated for the common folk.

He can be very demanding, which is his good point for those who like this. My opinion is that he is more along lines of meditation and not contemplation or simple prayer. I would say “rigorous” and “demanding”. And good for those who like this. And that is the wonderful thing about the church, we find all kinds of spiritual ways to God, one to suit everyone.
