I am nearing completion of a series of blog articles on the remarkable Syriac mystic, St Isaac of Ninevah. His witness is one that needs to be heard clearly in both the Eastern and Latin Churches. The series begins with this article “Preaching the Astonishing Love of God.”

BTW, does anyone know whether St Isaac is recognized as a saint in the Latin Church?

Yes, He is! January 28… Saint Seraphim of Sarov mentions him in his writings also

beati Isaaci de Syria = Blessed Isaac of Syria

Sanctus, Sancte, San, Santo, etc, are words that mean Saint.

Theodoret of Cyrus (a Nestorius supporter who did not accept St Cyril of Alexandria or the Council of Ephesus) is not a Saint and the Eastern Orthodox refer to him as Blessed Theodoret. 🙂

Saint Isaac the Syrian is one of the most profound mystics in the Christian tradition. I absolutely adore his writings, especially his emphasis on that pure prayer above thought.

I will read your blog series with pleasure FrKimel 🙂

Words and Prayers of St. Isaac the Syrian

Let yourself be persecuted, but do not persecute others.
Be crucified, but do not crucify others.
Be slandered, but do not slander others.
Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep: such is the sign of purity.
Suffer with the sick.
Be afflicted with sinners.
Exult with those who repent.
Be the friend of all, but in your spirit remain alone.
Be a partaker of the sufferings of all, but keep your body distant from all.
Rebuke no one, revile no one, not even those who live very wickedly.
Spread your cloak over those who fall into sin, each and every one, and shield them.
And if you cannot take the fault on yourself and accept punishment in their place,
do not destroy their character.
