St. James, called the Greater, preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, and Spain. On his return to Jerusalem, Herod condemned him to death: he was beheaded A.D. 42. His body was conveyed to Compostella in Spain, and is venerated by many pilgrims.
INDROIT (Ps. 138, 17)
Thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honorable; their principality is exceedingly strenthened. Ps. ibid. 1. 2. Lord, thou has proved me and known me: thou hast known my sitting down and rising up. Glory be to the Father…—Thy friends—

Be thou, O Lord, the sanctifier and protector of Thy people: so that defended by the aid of Thine Apostle James, they may please Thee in their manner of life, and serve thee in peace of soul. Through our Lord…

EPISTLE
From the First Letter of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians, 4 9-15
[St. Paul describes the treatment the Apostles everywhere endured for Christ’s sake]
Brethren, I think that God hath set forth us Apostles the last, as it were men appointed to death: we are made a spectacle to the world, and to Angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ: we are weak, but you are strong: you are honourable, but we without honor. Even unto this hour, we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no fixed abode, and we labor working with our own hands. We are reviled, and we bless: we are persecuted and we suffer it: we are blasphemed, and we entreat: we are made as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all even until now. I write not these things to confound you: but I admonish you as my dearest children. For if you have ten thousand instructors in Christ Jesus, yet not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus by the Gospel have I begotten you.
GOSPEL
Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, 20. 17-28
[Jesus fortells His Passion and Resurrection. He will make us participants in His resurrection, if we die to our sins.]
At that time, Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them: Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn Him to death, and shall deliver Him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and the third day He shall rise again. Then came to Him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of Him. Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to Him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on Thy right hand, and the other on Thy left, in Thy kingdom. And Jesus answering said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to Him: We can. He saith to them: my chalice indeed you shall drink: but to sit on my right or my left hand is not Mine to give to you, but for them for whom it is prepared by my father… And the ten, hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them to Him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them: and them that are the greater exercise power over them. It shall not be so among you: but whoever shall be greater among you, let him be your minister: and he that will be first among you will be your servant. Even as the Son of Man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a redemption for many.
OFFERATORY (ps. 24 1-3)
To Thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul. In Thee, O my God, I put my trust, let me not be ashamed: neither let my enemies laugh at me; for none of them that wait on Thee shall be confounded.
SECRET
May the holy martyrdom of the blessed Apostle James, we beseech Thee, O Lord, make acceptable the offerings of Thy people: and since they have no worth from any merits of ours, may his prayers make them pleasing to Thee. through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
