Last weekend I went,as I always do (as an observer only), with my partner to his church. He is SDA. Anyway one of the people who got up to talk was a young girl. Her talk was interesting in that it centered around Joan of Arc. Interesting in that never once did she say SAINT Joan of Arc. I wanted to jump up and say…did you know Joan is a CATHOLIC saint? I didn’t…held my tongue. I love when they (SDA’s) put down the Catholic church and then give a talk with the central figure being a Catholic saint.

I know…it’s almost like they have to admit someone’s holiness, but if they are evangelicals, they don’t want to admit they were Catholic, or if they are secularists they don’t want to acknowledge the holiness of someone who did great work in service to the poor or in philosophy. I’ve heard people drop the St. from St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, and many others.

On a side note, many non-catholics do not even know that St. Joan of Arc has been canonized. Anyone who knows about her knows that she was burned at the stake, and many know she was later cleared of heresy. Her canonization was very recent- too recent, in my opinion, so many have not heard the complete story.

I can’t imagine that people are unaware she’s a saint. Even george Bernard Shaw titled his play about her Saint Joan.

I am sure they knew all right. But they would be darned if they would admit it. it’s ok…I make them squirm when I take out my rosary in the middle of their service.
