Before one goes discounting one of today’s saints, please hear this post out. If you’re discerning the priesthood, or even the religious life, then reading St. John of Avila would be in order, IMHO.
St. John is not to be confused with St. John of the Cross, who was a directee of his, along with St. Teresa of Avila and other saints who were contemporaries. The great Counter Reformation spiritual writers had St. john of Avila as their spiritual director. I think that’s saying something.
At any rate, please get to know St. John of Avila through this article from Homiletic and Pastoral Review:
I find it unfortunate that his “Audi, Filia” is not available online that I could see. He does have his own volume in the Classics of Western Spirituality series, though.
Blessings,
