In modern terms St John of the Cross was talking about the ego.
The ego creates the false images of self, which we want the world to notice.
It dwells on the past, regretting mistakes that were made that didn’t serve the ego, or the one’s that boasted the ego into greater false self images.
It also dwells on the future, planning out how to make the false self-image greater in the eyes of others.
The weakest place for the ego is the present moment, which is why St John says to detach from these other things.
God dwells in the present, because it’s the only reality that exists.

God transcends time and space. That transcendence is very real, or the ground of all reality. We “need” that full reality even if we cannot experience it.
Accepting God as transcendent of our time, space, and circumstances is what allows us to detach from things that don’t belong to us, like the past or future. It allows us to fall forward into what might seem to be darkness.

Agreed, we experience God in the presence.
However, unlike God, we do not transcend time.
Our mortal bodies had a beginning at birth and will have an end at death.
Our souls, will go on to dwell in eternity with God. We will also rise from the dead, whatever that means.
