“Former St. John’s University dean, Cecilia Chang, who was charged earlier this month with embezzling over $1 million in donations from the college, was nabbed again today by the FBI and accused using scholarship students as domestic servants.” - Fox News story

So you are going to blame an entire university for the actions of one person acting on her own. Hmmm… Should we also blame the entire Church for some priests who act on their own to abuse children? I guess some people would.

I happen to know good people in the administration and faculty of St. John’s. Good, holy people who care about the Vincentian mission to the poor and needy. The University cares about the students and I am sure they are working to make this right with them.

But then again I am a bit prejudiced since I am a graduate.

Wow, that woman has a seriously bad case of “angry eyes.”

Glad this is coming out and that babe is getting what’s coming to her.

Nah… you’re right. No one should be held accountable. The Bishops should never help ensure that Catholic Universities are truly Catholic and are uphold Catholic morals.

Did I question whether or not St. John’s didn’t employee good Catholics or did I post this news article suggesting that the Bishops become more involved in the Universities that they oversee?

And how is a bishop to know if one of the school’s administration is involved in such a thing…they didn’t even know what their own priests were doing. Do you think bishops are involved in the everyday running of a university. In that same diocese a few years ago a priest was involved in embezzlement for years, keeping a lover, and spending thousand of dollars on vacation and homes. I guess the diocese should be held accountable.

She didn’t do this out in the open. Until someone comes forward with an accusation or evidence these things can go on for a long amount of time with no one finding out. She probably knew how to hide it well.

St. John’s is one of, if not, the largest Catholic University in the US with three campuses. They have quite a number of deans. I received nothing but quality Catholic education during my years there. I know three high ranking people in the university and this was a surprise to them.

I am wondering if the students victimized by this woman were foreign. SJU has many foreign students and she could have been playing into their unfamiliarity with US culture. I am going to contact my friend who is a vice-president and see what he has to say.

If you ask the average person about the Chtholic Church organization
They believe its run like a business model. Top down
with the local parish being micromanaged from above.
The truth is each Pastor has little oversite from his Bishop
That’s why we have seen so many of these cases
There is even less oversite exercised by the bishops over univ.

Let me help you overcome your ignorance as to the realities of Catholic Universities. You or I could be the Bishop and we could have absolutely NO effect on Catholic Universities. The Bishop has absolutely no power over the Universities. An example would be the Notre Dame fiasco with Obama last year. The Bishop of South Bend did not approve like you and I would do but that was about it.

This is a case of 1 Professor doing a horrendous activity.

I thank you for your assistance concerning overcoming my ignorance and I’d like to return the favor.

In the United States, we actually want our Catholic Universities and colleges to adhere to Pope John Paul II’s Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Our Bishops, with regards to this document, grant a statement called a mandatum to those universities and colleges that uphold Catholic dogma. The mandatum testifies that the school is in fact truly Catholic and observes Church teachings. If, however, a school is (to use your word) ignorant enough, to approach the hiring of professors who practice and teach against the Church or outside of doctrine or who do not monitor to ensure that professors are conducting themselves and their classes in a manner befitting a Catholic institution, the mandatum can be withheld or revoked. This would allow concerned Catholic parents and potential students the opportunity and knowledge needed to make an informed decision concerning their future Catholic University choices. Now, perhaps the Canadian Bishops do not follow Ex Corde Ecclesiae and perhaps they ignore Canon 812 of the CCC. I don’t know. But here in the US, our Bishops have declared that they would in fact obey and it is my hope that they do so.

Please educate yourself on the matter by going to and actually reading the link below.

terrible story, if true, and a pressing prayer need, but it is not “going on at Catholic universities” it is going on at one school and is a crime on the part of one individual.
