Traditional iconography depicted Our Lady on the Lord’s right and St John the Baptist on the Lord’s left. Liturgy honoured St John the Foreunner above all saints after our Lady. Even today, St John is the only saint, other than Our Lord and Our Lady, who is honoured as a saint even at his nativity. In the Eastern Churches, St John is definitely still honoured second after the Mother of God.
At what point did St Joseph “surpass” St John in the Latin Church? I know it was a gradual process. I believe it was only in 1955 that St Joseph was inserted into the Roman Canon?
