I came across a prayer card from www.nosuddendeath.com , and am intrigued by it. They say that “Whoever reads this prayer or hears it or carries it, will never die a sudden death, nor be drowned, nor be poisoned. They will not fall into the hands of the enemy nor be burned in any fire, nor will they be defeated in battle.”
The prayer comes from the “History of Joseph the Carpenter”, which I gather is a text that was considered, but never made it into the Biblical canon.
My questions:
  • what exactly is the “History of Joseph”?
  • although a beautiful prayer, where does it imply that the reader will not be poisoned, burned, drowned, etc…?
  • wouldn’t this prayer card be considered a “sacramental”? And, if so, doesn’t believing that it contains some sort of power (e.g. “good luck”) a false teaching?
  • what’s the Church’s teaching on all of this?

I am always suspicious of prayers that make these kinds of claims with them. Your best bet, rather than to say particular prayers to make God jump through your hoop, is just to pray along with these prayers, “Thy Will be done, O Lord.”
