I’m considering getting a St Joseph Scapular and a Miraculous medal, I’m hoping to get them blessed by a visiting priest who says the TLM once a month in my city, however as I don’t to be too much hassle I was wondering whether the priest could just use a general blessing or whether the specific blessings for the two would have to be used? I know there are specific blessings for the two, but frankly I don’t want to have the priest spending 10 or 15 minutes doing long rituals if he could just do a shorter one, particularly as it will be directly before or after mass.

After you get your scapular, you must have it blessed by a priest. After it’s been blessed, you then become “invested” when the priest recites certain prayers (different scapulars have different prayers for investement). Many scapulars do not require investment at all, but simply need to be blessed – as do all scapulars – and then used properly per the directions below.
As for the Miraculous medal I can’t find many references to a specific ritual so I’m guessing a ‘simple’ blessing will suffice?

Thanks in advance for any help 🙂

Go to EWTN for the blessing for the Miraculous medal. My preist used it a few years ago when he blessed mine.

No, don’t use the general prayer. Use the one you get with the scapular.

Usually when you buy a new scapular, inside the package, they supply you with the prayers needed for your investiture. It’s not a long prayer of investiture as it is for the brown scapular. I don’t have a St. Joseph scapular, but I’ve been invested in the St. Joseph cord, which is a bit different.

The reason for needing to be invested is because your prayers are combined with those who are part of the society that started that particular scapular. The St. Joseph scapular is a capuchin scapular. That way, you share in the fruits of that society, because you become, in a way, part of their society through your pious efforts.

My advice to you, though: Invest in a quality scapular.

I wear a St. Michael and Redemptorist scapular. I’ll tell you that, the cheap ones are super itchy, which is good if you want to be penitent, but for a weak person like me, I like things to be bearable to wear for very long periods of time. Try to find one that you can launder.

When I was invested in the Brown Scapular the FSSP priest used a Latin prayer which was different than what came with the scapular. I also recommend getting two scapulars so one can be worn while the other is washed, only one has to be blessed.

I managed to find the prayer, you’re right its not a long prayer for the St Joseph Scapular, the one for the miraculous medal on the other hand

I had a general blessing done for my MMs. Worked fine. I don’t think our Lady specified. She’s probably happy.

same here, I had a general blessing for my MM. I think that fills her request to have them blessed since she, herself gave no other specifics.
If she would have wanted something specific, she would have said. Look at the specifics she gave for the striking of the medal. She was very particular on that.
I would have thought if a special blessing were crucial then she certainly would have mentioned it.
Well, that’s my take on it 🙂

God Bless,
cheese

I’m glad you found it! For the MM, and as the others have said, as far as I know, it’s usually a generalized blessing that works. It’s not the same idea as a scapular, where you would be invested in a confraternity or the like.

I hope it goes well for you. 🙂

Agreed, ivestment for my brown scapular was very different! Unfortunately I have no idea what kind of blessing requirements there are for a St. Joseph scapular… sorry

Here is a novena and the act of consecration to Mary you may also want to do.

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NINE DAY NOVENA

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let Us Pray
O God who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us
in the same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation, through Jesus Christ
Our Lord.
Amen.

O Mary, conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times)

O Lord Jesus Christ, who have vouchsafed to glorify by numberless miracles the Blessed Virgin Mary, immaculate from the first moment of her conception, grant that all who devoutly implore her protection on earth, may eternally enjoy Your presence in heaven, who, with the Father and Holy Spirit, live and reign, God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who for the accomplishment of Your greatest works, has chosen the weak things of the world, that no flesh may glory in Your sight; and who for a better and more widely diffused belief in the Immaculate Conception of Your Mother, has wished that the Miraculous Medal be manifested to Saint Catherine Labouré, grant, I beseech You, that filled with like humility, I may glorify this mystery by word and work.
Amen.

Memorare
Remember, O most compassionate Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy assistance, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To thee I come; before thee I kneel, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer them.
Amen.

Novena Prayer
O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus and my Mother, penetrated with the most lively confidence in your all-powerful and never-failing intercession, manifested so often through the Miraculous Medal. I, your loving and trustful child, implore you to obtain for me the graces and favors I ask during this Novena, if they be beneficial to my immortal soul, and the souls for whom I pray. (here privately form your prayer requests) You know, O Mary, how often my soul has been the sanctuary of your Son who hates iniquity. Obtain for me then a deep hatred of sin and that purity of heart which will attach me to God alone so that my every thought, word and deed may tend to His greater glory. Obtain for me also a spirit of prayer and self-denial that I may recover by penance what I have lost by sin and at length attain to that blessed abode where you are the Queen of angels and of all people.
Amen.

An Act of Consecration to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, I dedicate and consecrate myself to you under the title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. May this Medal be for me a sure sign of your affection for me and a constant reminder of my duties toward you. Ever while wearing it, may I be blessed by your loving protection and preserved in the grace of your Son. O most powerful Virgin, Mother of my Savior, keep me close to you every moment of my life. Obtain for me, your child, the grace of a happy death; so that, in union with you, I may enjoy the bliss of heaven forever.
Amen.

O Mary, conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times)

A general blessing for the miraculous medal is perfectly fine. Just so long as it IS blessed.
