St. Joseph, Selling Your Home

Ok, I will admit that I did this last year when I put my house on the market. I know my reasons were purely selfish, and they talk about having faith. I didn’t have faith, I just wanted to get my house sold, and I didn’t care how! A lady I work with (who I don’t believe is Catholic) told me it worked for her, and I went for it. I read the history, and it was interesting, but I really only cared that it would get my house sold.

Looking back, I remember tossing the prayer card thing into the slot where I put mail that I need to look at, and burying the statue (in a plastic bag- not sure why, maybe because I didn’t want it to get dirty?) under a flower pot at the end of my sidewalk.

Nothing happened, I took the house off the market after 6 months and 2 showings, and St. Joseph went into the trash.

I’m feeling rather guilty now.

Can I try again? I just put my house up on the market again, but I really need it to sell this time (ever heard of biting off too much house?) before I just plain lose the house. The housing market nationally is failing, but it has already bottomed out in my neck of the woods.

Anyway- I’d love some suggestions on what to do! I’ll gladly bury another statue, but I’d like to know more about the prayer, etc.

Don’t bury a statue - that’s a silly superstition.

Do pray to St Joseph - I think ewtn.com has the 30-Day prayer to him, which I believe is the traditional one.

Yeah, it is rather an odd and silly superstition. I’m amazed how many non-Catholics know about it! Perhaps instead of burrying a statue, you could create a place of prayer and reflection in your backyard.

I totally agree with asking St. Joseph to intervene on your behalf. He was chosen by God to look after the temporal needs of Mary and Jesus, after all. I’m currently asking him for assistance in finding a home in our neighborhood on my budget. All things are possible with God.

Pray, and know that you are in my prayers.

Make sure your house is clutter-free.

Make sure it smells good. (bake some bread or rolls before it’s shown)

Have a nice clean entry-way - first impressions are everything.

Turn all the lights on.

I’m sure there are other tips… maybe you could do a search of how to sell your house quickly? I’m just remembering the things we did when we sold our last house.

I love having a clean house, and having it on the market has put me into hyperdrive! Just ask my sister, she has to live with me (pray for her, she needs it!) 🙂

My house is on the market too. My sister is the realtor and light-heartedly bought a St Joseph staue to bury in my back yard along with a prayer to read.

I agree it is a superstition. However I took the oppurtunity to use the moment to share in prayer with others. I don’t think it either helped or hurt the prospects of selling my house, but it was a nice moment to share 🙂 .

Besides, I have mixed emotions about selling. It’s a commuting issue. Either long commute and live where I love, or short commute and live where I’d prefer not. Maybe St Joseph can help with the difficult decision. 🙂

I think there is a gender issue here. The above quote sounds like something my wife would say.

I lean more towards thinking the property (something that can’t be changed) and the soundness of the structure along with the overall size, layout and location sell a house.

My wife and I have this debate all the time. Of course she thinks I just use it as an excuse to not clean up after myself. 😃

I tell her we should give the potential buyer more credit in being able to see the house with thier own furniture and cleanliness. IN other words, see through our stuff.

The same holds true when she and I look for a house. I look at the pictures of the outside and do a mapquest on the property, she comments on the rooms. I try to tell her that all the nice furniture she is seeing goes with the sellers.

(seriously, I do see the value in presentation…half jokiing here).

I’m with your wife! I pretty much decide in… oh about 3 seconds if the house I’m looking at is a possiblity. If it’s dirty or it has a funky smell… forget it. One time we walked though a house and there was LITERALLY dog feces in several rooms. Gross. The house was a great deal - great location but there was NO WAY I could look any further.

We did finally settle on a fixer-uper because my husband is the voice of reason… but one without the doggie piles.
 
our mobile was on the market for 3 years, fortunately rented all that time so we did not lose money, but it was a hassle. I got a tiny St. Joseph statue in the mail from a missionary group. I just put him here on my desk, and prayed everytime I looked at him and asked him to find the right couple for this home. The renters who were in the house bought it when their lease was up. thanks, St. Joseph, only took about 6 weeks to wrap everything up.
 
When window treatments are included, what exactly does that entail- will I be leaving all my curtains??
 
? Asking St. Joseph, for discernment in using part of the proceeds from the sale - to help the poor and homeless 🙂

There are many Catholics who lament about how little we hear about the need / benefits of giving and the touching way The Lord brings this up , esp. in the book of Malachi ; yes in one sense ,an easy thing to do and yet someting that can set off a cascade …breaking off areas of selfishness which often is the root of relational problems and so on…

There is an article in This Rock magazine this month about this. I was disappointed that the gentleman who wrote the article said burying a statue of St. Joseph borders on superstition. It does not border…it is plain superstitious to me and wished he would have said so instead of trying to skirt the issue. I have no problems asking a saint to join me in prayer…but burying a statue is a no no for me.

I agree, and I always feel the obligation to correct someone when the burying of St. Joseph’s statue is brought up. And, it doesn’t help that in practically every Catholic book and gift shop I have been in I see the cellophane packet with the small plastic statue and the prayer. It is the prayer and your faith that counts, not burying the statue. This practice, although it is probably done innocently, can give a bad impression to non-Catholics.
 
Well, I’ve been trying to pray to St. Joseph every day, and my house got shown today. It wasn’t exactly an offer, but its a start. I’m praying more, and that alone is an improvement! 🙂
 
My local Catholic Bookstore has House Selling Kits with a St. Joseph statue, and a novena (I think) to St. Joseph. Some may consider it superstitious, but somebody is making money off selling these kits.
