What special devotions can we practice on St. Joseph’s Day? I think there is a litanany for St. Joseph. Meatless dishes for dinner. I just love St. Joseph, his humility is such an example.

It says “solemnity” on my calendar for today St. Joseph 19th March.

What is the difference between a “solemnity” and a feast day?
Is a solemnity always also a feast day?

From Lat. solet and annus – a yearly celebration

Now I find that there is an intrinsic solemnity and an extrinsic solemnity (Catholic Encyclopedia). Anybody care to give examples for those who know English but don’t know Catholic practices (or fancy language) so well?

Thank you.

just to be safe check out my wonderful fish stew recipe on the BACK FENCE forum under WATER COOLER!!! It is YUMMY! It is St. Joseph’s Day Ciuppin—Fish Stew.

NB: That in common parlance, we may speak of feasts generally: the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the feast of the Archangels, the feast of St Joseph, the feast of St Patrick, et cetera. But “Feast” is also a specific rank of liturgical celebration.

A Solemnity is greater than a Feast.

A Precedence Table is available at the Table of Liturgical Days.

A Solemnity is greater than a Feast Day, and actually begins the evening before the day itself (like Sunday, also being a Solemnity, begins on Saturday evening), unless the evening before is Sunday evening. 🙂
