Do you have to go to Mass on the day of consecration? Or is it ok not to?

I want to consecrate myself on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe because it was with that apparition that I came to terms with Mary after my reversion to the Church. But Dec. 12 is on a Friday and I’m but a high school student. I won’t be able to make it to Mass on that day. Sunday preceding and following, yes.

Dear White Peony,

Although St. Louis De Montfort recommends one consecrate oneself by praying the words of the Consecration after receiving Holy Communion at Mass, if one is unable to participate on that day, one can still make a very fervent “Spiritual Communion” and pray those words in the stillness of one’s own room, or a quiet place outdoors or in a Church or chapel.

The True Devotion and Consecration is first of all “interior”. God knows each heart and knows each of us as unique and unrepeatable persons. May you be blessed beyond measure by consecrating yourself on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You can renew your consecration by repeating the words after receiving Jesus at Mass on the following Sunday, also. I believe St. John Paul II prayed his total Consecration to Jesus through Mary every day. I don’t pray the long form every day but I try to pray the short form often:
“My Queen and my Mother I am all yours. Keep me. Guard me as your property and possession.”

I first consecrated myself in the Church next door to our High School. It was not at a Mass but on a school day. Our Religion teacher, Sister Therese Catherine, O.P. who was also the Spiritual Director of our Junior Legion of Mary took a group of us over to Church and we prayed our long form of St. Louis De Montfort’s Consecration. I was around 15 years old, and I shall be eternally grateful to Sister for all she did to help us to love Jesus and Mary more.

Its on here, under Day 34:

As another poster suggested I would say the words at home, too, but I would do this *as well * on that day, not instead. I would also go to a Mass as this is a requirement. If there is not a Friday evening Mass, you could do this after Communion on the following Sunday Mass, and/or the Saturday, and repeat the words of consecration after Mass as specified. Remember that you are meant to go to confession on the day or 8 days prior to the day of consecration.

I would pray about the situation - not being able to attend the Friday Mass.

God bless.

Hello WP.

The first time you do it you should do so according to the schedule in the booklet. There is a reason for this. All the instructions are in the booklet.

I’m Consecrated too. I re-new my Consecration several times a year by following the guide for the 33 days but I’ve picked various feast days to end on. I always renew each year for my anniversary date of my original Consecration. This is required. This is a beautiful yet simple spirituality and there are several Saints in the Montfort family most recently St. John Paul II who will become your spiritual Brother as soon as you complete your first cycle. I hope you join us.

Dear OP: The posts about taking the Consecration days seriously I would like to reiterate, however…

Please ignore and steer clear of the web link I posted (the fisheaters). It has since been brought to my attention that it would not be advisable to visit this website as an obedient Roman Catholic. I apologise for posting this link. I had no idea this was the case.

I couldn’t remember initially but this is the the website I used:

www.totalconsecration.ageofmary.com/preparation-01.html

I would advise printing out the all the prayers for the days in advance and being as organised as one can be as there is a fair amount to go through. Enjoy!

God bless. 🙂

White Peony,

One of the nicest acts you could do for your spiritual life. So happy to hear of your planned consecration to Mary.

May our mother Mary embrace you in her special way.
