This Lucy was after the apostles being in 304 AD. She brought food to the early Christians who assume had been run out of the Synagogues and were in the catacombs. She wore a wreath on her head and candles. Now is that were we get our advent wreath? Why did Lucy wear “candles” and what happened to her?

St Lucy did not wear a wreath or candles on her head and it is not where the Advent wreath comes from.

St Lucy was martyred.

The festival of light on St Lucy’s feast day wherein young girls wear candle wreaths on their heads in procession is common in Scandinavian countries on St Lucy’s feast day. The origin is in a festival of light associated with the solstice.

The Advent wreath is Germanic in origin, likely 16th century Lutherans. The modern advent wreath dates to the 1800s in Germany where it spread from Protestants to Catholics and then to the US through it’s large German immigrant population.
