Interesting place, I like the quietness and sanctity of these places. I frequent the local monastery for prayer, quietness and enjoy the gardens as well.

Yes, I feel the exact same way…in fact I picked up a brochure on their retreats and I am seriously thinking about trying one.
I haven’t been on a retreat since Catholic High School…but I really am feeling drawn towards it…I was really fascinated with the Oblates also.
Not sure what He has in store for me at this point in my life, but I just keep following His lead…

Prayers for discernment most welcome!

I would like to visit there someday.

Here on the west coast, we have Prince of Peace Abbey, which was founded by monks from St. Meinrad Archabbey.

Wow…that is very cool, I had no idea…

I hope you get a chance to visit here…The Monks originally settled there because it reminded them so much of their home back in Europe…
A while ago I had a friend from Breitenholz Germany who we took camping up in the area (Ferdinand) and he was just amazed when we drove up there, he said it looked exactly like his home.

It is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in the states, and not being prejudiced as I live here 😋
It just is rolling hills and farms land…very serene.

St. Meinrad also enjoys the rare distinction of being one of only two archabbeys in the United States, the other being St. Vincent in Latrobe, PA.

I don’t travel much now due to family commitments, but I have often thought it would be nice to go on a long road trip and visit the various Benedictine monasteries around the US. Sort of like bar hopping, but with a nobler purpose!

I am an oblate there, and try to get there every month or so. In addition, my spiritual director is one of the monks there. And to top it off, my deacon formation program was through their School of Theology program. Needless to say, I love the place!

That is great to hear, I would love to hear more about your being an Oblate and your going to the Theology school.
I am very much being drawn to the place.
Are you from Southern Indiana?
I am in Evansville…if you have a desire to speak about it please let me know.

christofirst,
I read about them being one of two when I was visiting and had no idea…a very neat fact…I hope you get a chance to do your road trip, I have desired to visit a few myself. Our Lady Of Clear Creek Abbey is on the list in Oklahoma.

I’ve been to a number of retreats there. I love that place. Every time I go, I feel as though I am stepping into holy ground. I plan to go again this summer and I will probably become an oblate there. I feel that God is calling me to do so.

St. Meinrad is a beautiful place. Another place, maybe 2 hours away from st. Meinrad is the Abbey of Gethsemane near Bardstown KY. The Trappists are there. I’m sure many folk here will recognize that this abbey was the home of Thomas Merton.

I live in Sullivan County (south of Terre Haute). That is in the Evansville Diocese. I am willing to answer any questions you have.

Didn’t realize until this thread how many CAF’ers are in my neighborhood! 😀

Check out the Benedictine Monastery in nearby Ferdinand while you’re there!
That place too is absolutely gorgeous! I have not visited there as much as St. Meinrad though. So thanks for the reminder.
I think when it warms a tad more I will make another day trip to visit there.

I camp a lot up at Ferdinand State Forest…it is so very nice…I hope to move up to the are in the near future from Evansville. I think the area is very spiritual…and the countryside is really spectacular…wonderful people also. French Lick has some amazing places to visit…as does Ferdinand, jasper, Tell City…Paoli…very Catholic…

I used to work for an Episcopal man, every year he does a silent retreat at Gesthsemane. (They also sell some amazing fudge).

They USED to sell some of the funkiest smelling cheeses around. And they still sell the highest octane, bourbon infused fruit cakes anywhere.
They stopped making the cheese and went to fudge a few years ago.

I’m going there in the next couple of weeks. I’ve been on a number of retreats there and I love it. There is something so serene and yet spiritually energizing about St. Meinrad. I will probably become an oblate there since I feel a real connection.

I am considering it myself…I am hoping to move up to the area soon…it is only an hour drive from my house anyway. I have always loved the area and have visited it since I was a kid often. In my younger days I camped a whole bunch all over there area the area. Ferdinand State Park, Patoka Lake, Lincoln State Park, the list goes on…
There are so many places to go in the area if you like the quiet calm of the outdoors…the only drawback is the stinking deer ticks and suicidal road turkeys that stalk unsuspecting drivers during certain seasons.I have seen an entire front end of a truck obliterated by those crazy flightless fowl.

The Archabbey itself is for lack of a better word, magical.
It really has a spiritual aura about it.
The people I have met and spoke with there are just beyond wonderful.
I keep getting drawn back more and more…it just feels… right. I have no other way to describe the feeling and peace I feel when I am there. It is nothing I have experienced before and I have been in many countries and lived in Alaska. Nothing compares.

I would love to hear about your progress with becoming an Oblate too!
