Hello everyone!

Can someone tell me if the St. Michael Hymnal and/or the Adoremus Hymnal have guitar chords in the organ/accompaniment versions? I have received no reply from the publisher, and I can’t find a sample image anywhere. I am looking for a nice autoharp-friendly hymnal.

God bless

I can’t answer that, but the countdown officially begins now to see how soon someone will post to “inform” you that you should not be using guitars at Mass, period. 🙂

These hymnals were not meant for the guitar. That is why you will only find the organ/accompaniment versions.

Thanks for the quick replies. I’ve been trying to get an answer through the normal channels for about 2 weeks.

The parish I’m at has a musician and leader shortage so some of the a cappella attempts have been practically embarassing. We’re currently using Journeysongs and CBW III since they have the chords in the organ / accompaniment versions.

That’s a pity. I hate to be limited to OCP or GIA just to get the chords. Does anyone know if there is another choice that has chords available?

Coud the OP’s parish hire a musician to write out the guitar chords for the guitar accompanist?

Interesting.

Several people on CAF have assured me that a cappella singing in the Mass is so beautiful and wonderful and superior to singing with the worldly piano or guitar, that I was beginning to wonder if the parishes in my city are the only ones in the U.S. with parishioners who sound like mosquitos when they try to sing a cappella.

I feel better now. We’re normal here!

Actually, Adoremus has all the hymns on disc, so yes that would be a possibility for me (no need to hire anyone). I also need chords to play piano.

For everyone’s information here:

As a pianist (and a hack organist) I don’t like to read music. I read guitar chords to tell me what to play. I know how to read music, I have a music degree, but I dislike doing so, and most accompaniments written are awful.

It is a perfectly acceptable question to be asking for guitar chords, even for old school music.
