Does anyone do the St. Michael prayer after Mass to limit the noise? What about the chaplet of St. Michael?

I always say the prayer to St. Michael after Mass, but sadly I feel I am the only one, possibly two others but definately not everyone 😦

I rarely say the chaplet, I think once in the past year. :o

At our parish there are a few (one of whom I am not) who kneel and quietly say the St. Michael prayer after Sunday Mass. After the weekday Masses there is a long-standing tradition that everyone present says the prayer. When the new pastor took over a little over two years ago, and when he saw that everyone present was participating, he began to (and still does) lead it himself.

In our church and a few others I have visited the congregations prays the St Michael Prayer after the Creed and Intercessions.

At our parish it is prayed together by all of the congregation at the end of each Mass right before the priest gives his final blessing.

In our diocese, our wonderful bishop initiated this practice this past Easter season. We now say this prayer after the blessing . It is said at every mass for vocations. I am happy to report that we are seeing the effects. The Bishop also meets with all of the confirmandi prior to confirmation and talks about vocations to the young men and women (priests for the young men and religious for young women) He plants the seeds and the prayer helps to water it.

Our parish does this as well, but AFTER the final blessing, before any recessional hymn.

Of the parishes that say the St. Michael prayer, either at the end of Mass or following the rosary as they do in our parish, they seem to be praying the prayer for different intentions as noted in this thread. Someone mentioned that they are praying for quiet before Mass, another said they pray the St. Michael prayer for vocations. At our parish they prayer for the conversion of the world to Catholicism. Is there supposed to be a particular intention associated with praying the St. Michael prayer after Mass, and if so, what is that intention?

I occasionally pray after mass, and occasionally the St Michael prayer, but I only ever pray for the stated intentions of the prayer, or I’ll add my own specific intentions. I never pray with an alternate motive. Can you perhaps clarify what you mean by “to limit the noise”?

I think the poster is referring to an attempt at returning a sense of the sacred to the church.

Well, sure, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that when he says he’s praying to limit noise that he means he’s offering prayers with the special intention that God will lead people to more silence. The purpose of the Prayer of St Michael is to open a dialogue with St Michael in order to ask for specific intentions… not to make people whisper in our presence and thus to profane the prayers we are using… hence why I am giving the OP the benefit of the doubt and asking for a clarification.

If noise after mass is that big of a problem, then the OP’s best response is to ask the priest to make an announcement, or ask the priest to lead prayers after mass, or ask the priest to have the choir play a soft instrumental after mass… but there is no authority granted in any church document which entitles laypersons in the congregation to police others… that is the proper role of the pastor.

In my local RC parish, there is no limit to noise. It’s a horrible cacophony. I recall during Lent last year that one of cantors (when announcing that there was no recessional) requested that the faithful leave in silence and then he added, “WITHOUT TALKING.” It worked!

For the weeks previous to that, folks had been leaving in silence while talking. 😃

My guess is that your parish is like my local one – folks clap after the recessional hymn at the end of Mass? These are always the noisest parishes in my experience.

Everyone will just hang around like it’s cocktail hour till the instrumental ends, and then they will clap.
That’s not the point. The point is that policing post-liturgy noise in the sanctuary is the job of the priest, however he wants or deems suitable to handle the situation.

Well, I agree. While the cocktail music at the end of Mass may work in your parish, I have yet to hear it work in any of my area parishes. Folks just get noiser.

From what I can tell, most priests in my area enjoy noise after Mass. Perhaps this is why it continues? Maybe there’s a bingo parlor atmosphere loophole in the GIRM? 🤷

Not sure what you mean by the noise but I have said it for many years when the Priest is reading the notices.

I’ve already read them and like this prayer very much.

So from reading this thread, parishes should keep the noise to a minimum after Mass so others can continue in prayer? Rather than the parish meeting in the back of the church to gossip??

I don’t know much about what ‘should’ be going on.

Thanks to any response I get!

No. We do not keep silent in the church so that others can continue to pray. That is a side effect. People should be quiet in church out of respect for God, whose house it is. We should not profane the church with mundane conversations.

Generally speaking, churches will have what is called a Narthax, which is an entry room outside the sanctuary. This is where people can congregate and talk at a reasonable level. Another option is for churches to use their parish hall for a reception after mass (if there is no narthax or the narthax isn’t large enough).

No need to get snarky. Sacred arias (such as the Ave Maria) played on a pipe organ after mass in a cathedral are hardly “cocktail music”. Please, have a little charity here.
