St Michael? The angel Gabriel?

So St Michael is a saint, and an angel. How come it’s not ‘Saint’ Gabriel? Just a random thought I had.

I would guess it’s a matter of custom. The church is two thousand years old: it’s to be expected that we’ll have a lot of old customs.

Hi Joy,

The other Archangels that we recognize in the Catholic church–Gabriel and Raphael–are also saints as well.

There are churches and schools named St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael, after the archangels. Also some statues of them have “St. Gabriel” and “St. Raphael” on the bases, so they are also called saints.

We have St Michael, St Gabriel, and St Raphael - see, ‘saint’ has a double meaning. Saint is from “sancta” meaning, ‘holy.’ The angels are holy, so to say “st” whomever is just to refer to their sanctity.
