Here we have the aberration of “Santa Claus” which is closer to some kind of pagan mythology than Christianity. We need to get rid of this Santa Claus junk and bring back the real Christian tradition of St. Nicholas.

We celebrate him with GREAT joy here in California!* In my Eastern Catholic (Russian) parish his feast was Dec. 6. At the Festal Vigil I attended 12/5 at a Russian Orthodox Church we were blest with a wonder-working icon of St. Nicolas. I think it came with the bishop.

• Maybe you know that Russians came across what is now Alaska and down into what is now California and settled here. You can read about one Russian settlement what eventually was abandoned but is preserved at Fort Ross State Park. There are two annual pilgrimages there, visiting the Orthodox cemetery. We celebrate a feast day for St. Nicholas of Myra in the Greek archdiocese, although on a different day.

On the calendar the Greeks use, St. Nicholas’ is celebrated on 12/6.

My family celebrate by having the Stockings filled that morning, but with little unwrapped gifts, not $ like he was famous for doing.

I find that moving this part of the “Americanized” Christmas Tradition to the “real” Santa’s Feast Day, it allows for the kids to appreciate the real St. Nicholas and seperate Santa from the Feast of the Nativity which should be focused on Christ.

Plus the kids like it because it extends the Holiday Fun!
