Are Catholic’s allowed to eat corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day this year?

It depends on your Bishop. My bishop said they can, if it is specifically to observe St. Patrick’s day.

So if your bishop doesn’t address the issue I guess you can assume its a “no” on the corned beef?

Cardinal William H. Keeler of the Archdiocese of Baltimore has granted a dispensation for those of Irish heritage that wish to eat a tradition Irish meal on St. Patrick’s day (2006), but strongly encourages those that participate in the dispensation to pick up the fast on another day of the week.

Bishop grants dispensation for St. Patrick’s Day

Bishop J. Peter Sartain has granted a general dispensation from the Lenten obligation of abstaining from meat on Friday, March 17, the feast day of St. Patrick. This dispensation is granted to all members of the Church within the Diocese of Little Rock.
In lieu of this dispensation, the bishop recommends that each member who avails him/herself of the dispensation, substitute another form of penance in its place at another time during the remainder of the Lenten season.
The feast of St. Patrick rarely falls on a Friday during Lent. The roots of the Catholic faith in Arkansas are Irish; our first two bishops were born in Ireland. The history of the diocese is rich with the Irish traditions, which are generously shared with all of our ethnic communities who also traditionally celebrate the life and the work of St. Patrick. Thus the reason for the dispensation.

Yep. He would have said yes or no by now.
But just because you haven’t heard anything doesn’t mean that he hasn’t addressed the issue. Call your parish, they will know or can find out for you.

As I stated in another post someplace, if you live in the greater Chicago area (Joliet and Rockford included), this Friday you’ll be eating your corned beef or ham.
I can’t tell about Peoria or Belleville, IL. Belleville’s web site is so outdated, it turns up all the stuff they did in 2004.
