St. Patrick's Parish in San Diego?

Good morning, everyone. I hope this is the right place to post this question!

Does anyone belong to/ever been to St. Patrick’s in San Diego (on 30th St.-I think-by Balboa Park)? My dh is going to be travelling on business and will be going to Mass there in a couple of weeks (we live in the St. Louis area-O’Fallon, MO, actually). He just entered the Church this past Easter (Tiber Swim Team Class of 2007 ), and is “easily scandalized” (i.e., hates liturgical dancing, etc.). I saw that there is now a rule against saying a church is good, bad, etc., so a simple “yes” “no”, or thumbs up or down would suffice (and if it’s “no” or thumbs down, can you suggest another church in San Diego). He was surprised that this parish doesn’t have a website (hence why I’m here asking ). Thanks.

I vote that this thread violates the rule about talking about specific parishes.

Why don’t you tell your significant other that ANY mass is an experience with God that is SO much bigger than the people involved.

Guess what? I hate guitar music; i hate liturgical dancing; I hate homilists who can’t preach. And when I encounter these things, I realize that it’s not even about these things; it’s about the celebration of the Eucharist.

I have to agree with PaixGioiaAmor. It is against forum rules to identify certain parishes or pastors. It is also against forum rules to refer to a parish or priest as “less Catholic” or accuse them of liturgical abuse.

If you are so worried about the kind of Mass that you or your family members will attend, go find a Latin Mass.

Luckily, the forums temporarily crashed after I typed up a not so nice reply, to your two not so nice replies. I’m terribly sorry, it’s been awhile since I’ve been to the CA forums (had a lot of trouble w/ my sign on & password, as was too busy w/ other things to worry much about it). When I was last here, not only were people creating threads about heterodox parishes and liturgical abuses, but they usually provided links to said parishes as well.

Maybe I worded my question wrong. My HUSBAND (he’s not my “significant other”, we’re not gay or shacking up, so you don’t have to be politically correct) is not interested in attending a Latin Mass, he’s still learning the N.O. It’s just that, one of the things that drew him to the Catholic Church is that he was sick of Protestant innovations, which you can’t avoid as a protestant, unless you want to be constantly church shopping. It is easier to avoid Catholic innovations, but I guess you’re no longer allowed to ask for help in that area on these forums. He just wanted to know what to expect, charismatic, contemporary, traditional, etc., and to make sure church is actually in communion w/ Rome and not schismatic (as there is a parish in our archdiocese-and, no, I’m not going to break the rules by naming it-that recently went into schism, but they deny it and still portray themselves as a Catholic parish), as, as I mentioned, they have no website. He’s mostly concerned about this because a couple of months ago he went to Mass in Brazil and the church was so charismatic he wasn’t sure if it was really a Catholic church (he doesn’t know Portuguese) until he saw an ad for the Pope’s upcoming visit after Mass was over. I figured since this church is in San Diego that at least someone working for CA might be familiar w/ it.

Once again, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to break any rules, and I wasn’t trying to start a bash thread , your replies could have been a little more charitable. I find it funny that threads bragging about how you avoid EMHC’s, especially if they’re WOMEN are ok, but a person can’t ask anything about a particular parish. Boy, it’s gotten weird around here . My husband thinks you’re acting like fundamentalists (and being a former S. Baptist, he would know). You might want to check that, as I’m sure that’s a group you don’t want to be associated with. .

Go to St Mary’s in Escondido, the Pastor is faithful and the liturgies there are reverent and respectful. Only 25 min north, record a Catholic Answers show and take a quick drive.
I have no comment on any other Church in San Diego.

(why is it wrong to expose errant practices, if they are wrong they should be exposed, if they are correct then the truth will prevail. If someone asks me if I am faithful and believe in the Church I will say I believe 100% in the Catholic Church, it is perfect)

I can’t comment on that; I simply know that that is not supposed to be allowed.

Why would this offend you? Are you trying to go OUT OF YOUR WAY to bring up the gay issue in order to “hammer it home”? is not interested in attending a Latin Mass, he’s still learning the N.O. I don’t condone the Eucharistic Minister threads either. But naming a parish and commenting on it goes too far.

You don’t think that reply was a little bit snarky? Especially starting out w/ “I vote this violates…” I didn’t start a poll, a simple “I’m sorry, but I think this violates a rule” would have been nicer.

My dh and I know it’s about the EUCHARIST, that was #1 thing that made him convert, and the #1 thing that will ensure that I never leave (#2 being Peter the Rock) , and what consoles us through bad music and homilies (when they occur). But, as a brand new Catholic, he’s still figuring things out in the mass, and it’s easier if he knows what to expect, especially since I won’t be w/ him to explain anything weird, or help him find things in the missel (I know, the TLM is the same always everywhere, why doesn’t he go to that? Because he’s never been to one b/f, (and I haven’t either, I was born in 1971) and going to TLM for the 1st time while travelling alone for business would be more confusing than N.O. full of liturgical abuses).

And I just hate the term “significant other”, to me it smacks of political correctness. Around here, it means your live-in partner, gay or straight (and I’m not homophobic, I have gay friends, who always refer to their “significant others” or “partners”), otherwise you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or husband or wife, and since I clearly identified him as my husband, I didn’t understand why you used the term “significant other”, it just sounded rude, along w/ the rest of the reply “Why don’t you tell your significant other what the Mass is really about , 'cause obviously y’all don’t know” :tsktsk: is how it came across.

Once again, I didn’t know about the rule change, yeah I know I should have read all the stickies :doh2:, but I didn’t even think about it, as I was just excited about being able to post again (and since there’s plenty of other threads going on complaining about EMHCs and liturgical abuses, there’s no way I would have even guessed that asking about a parish is no longer allowed, especially as I wasn’t out to start a bash thread, just looking for info). I’m not a troll trying to start trouble here, honest. I’m truly sorry.

Ditto here, on the third paragraph. Scott Hahn has a great quote:“The only real liturgical abuse is that we’re all not worthy to receive the Eucharist.”

I didn’t think she was asking those kind of questions, just that “My husband is staying close to this church, can anyone tell me how their mass is?” Give the lady a break, she got her husband to convert and is trying to take care of him spiritually, or as we all know, trying to help him get to heaven.

I’ve heard great things about the parish in Escondido as well, but I know nothing of the parishes elsewhere in that area.

I do have a recommendation however.

I recently visited relatives in San Diego and my wife and I took time out to go to the Museum of Natural History at Balboa Park. The fee was $25 per person to see the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit. I highly recommend seeing the exhibit.

Tell your husband that your friends at Catholic Answers gave it the thumbs up.

Another thought:
I usually, when going to a place away from home, try to attend a special mass.
Last weekend we were in Pasadena, and decided to attend mass at the Cathedral in LA. For mass, and to see the grand-ness of a cathedral. It was beautiful inside, and quite serene.
Maybe find out where the See of the Diocese is and go there!

Interesting statement by Hahn. Having read some of his work though, I can say that it does make sense that he feels that way, at least from his point of view.

It was established by Blessed Junipero Serra himself and it is the site of the martyrdom of the holy priest Father Luis Jayme, killed by local natives. He is reported to have died saying,“Love God, my children, love God!” All the missions of California are special. This one is marked by a martyrdom. Tell him to go there.

I actually suggested that to him! A couple of years ago he helped move his best friend to San Diego (that’s who he’s going to be staying w/ the weekend he’s there, but nonCatholic, so he’ll have to go to Mass alone) and brought me back a cool book about the California Missions. I’d told him I’d dig it out and see if the one in San Diego was still an active parish, thanks, now I don’t have to. Now I’m going to strongly suggest he go there. Is there a museum there, as well? We went to a mission in Tuscan, AZ (the name totally escapes me now) that dated from the 1500s, I think, still had Mass every Sunday, plus had a museum (that had the clothes from the priest who founded it displayed, among other really neat items).
