Because of the scandal concerning the rector of Saint Patricks Cathedral and his resigation. The Archdiocese hired an outside firm to audit the Cathedrals books which the rector had been in charge of. No Irregularites were found.
It has been discovered that the Rector had been making around $ 46,666 dollars a year as an officer of an upstate charity.Which is more than the archbishop of New york is paid. It was also discovered that his secretary who was also involved in the scandal was getting $15,000 a year from the same charity.
This information comes from the NY Daily News and New Yorker Magazine.

It is standard operating procedure when a priest leaves, retires, that an audit of parish accounts is done. In my old diocese they did it every time a priest left even on a general transfer.

Many priests receive additional stipends from various apostolates, speaking fees, author payments, serving on boards etc. If his secretary was serving in a capacity for another group beyond her normal job, I expect she would be paid for it.

It sounds as if the NYDaily News is really short of news.
