yesterday was st. patty’s day and so a couple of friends and me went to a bar and had a few beers. i hadn’t eaten much at all that day and so by the end of the day i felt alittle sick. now, i know the beers were affecting me but i remember everything and was always in control of my actions.

i know that the church teaches that drunkenness is a mortal sin when you lose control of yourself. i dont believe i was ever out of control, i never blacked out, but at the end of the night i felt pretty sick (mostly because i think i had not eaten all day).

would this be a mortal sin? or a venial sin?

i wasn’t trying to “get drunk” but just enjoying st. patty’s day with some friends before going back to college… thanks for all the help

Don’t know that it was a sin at all. If you’re worried, take it to the confessional. Happy la fiele Padraig to ya fer yesterday! :irish3:

It was foolish, but not sinful, to not eat all day and then consume alcohol. “Feeling it a little” is not drunkeness- though you should avoid driving! It the wedding feast at Cana, Jesus turned the water into wine after they had already consumed wine. They had consumed enough wine that there was surprise that such good wine be brought out when it was not likely to be properly appreciated. That is- the guests already felt the effects of the alcohol. Drunkeness is a sin. Moderation may not be easy for some to judge, and they should veer on the side of abstinence.

Perhaps you understated you intoxication. In which case, it sounds like a venial sin since it was accidental. It is Lent. You should go to confession anyway. If you have doubt, bring it to confession.

I’m just curious. Are you suggesting that Jesus gave more alcohol to the people which could result in drunkenness (assuming that some were already not at that point)? Wouldn’t that make our Savior an enabler? He would become an accessory to sin which we know is impossible. He never sinned and never strengthened the hand of others to sin. (John 8:11)

Romans 14:21 “It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.”

To cause another to stumble on any point (whether it be diet or lust of the flesh) is wrong if done intentionally. It would be an intentional action for Jesus to supply more wine to individuals who “already felt the effects of the alcohol.”
