St Peter healed in Jesus' name. Why did his successors stop?

Jesus taught the apostles to minister to the infirm. He healed the sick and so did St Peter
( in the name of Jesus ) Why do St Peter’s successors and the successors of the apostles (the College of Cardinals) not minister healing openly and regularly as well? …If they do in fact minister healing …with the same results as Peter and the Apostles had … I have not heard anything about it.

I have seen the Carismatic Catholic laity specifically pray for healing and have known people who were healed of serious ailments as a result of those prayers. That specific activity that Jesus taught doesnt seem to play a prominent role within today’s Clergy though.
I ask because I believe it is a spiritual gift that is sorely needed among many Catholics … and nonCatholics. It was clearly exercised openly by St Peter and the Church leadership then. Why not now?

Uhh … every Pope and bishop who has ever been canonised (and there are lots of them) has done at least two miracles in order to achieve that sainthood. Almost always these would be healings of a physical nature, since those are the most easily verifiable. There is talk most recently of a miracle performed at the intercession of JP2 that may lead to his beatification.

And EVERY priest, from the Pope downwards, does administer the sacrament of anointing of the sick - many parishes have special ‘anointing Masses’ where this is indeed done both regularly and publicly. Since you don’t, presumably, read every church’s bulletin in your area you probably don’t hear about them, doesn’t mean they don’t happen.

I know people have been healed from these anointings, although since it happens as part of a formal sacrament I suppose it doesn’t occur to anyone to make a fuss about it. To God be the glory 🤷

Why do healings have to be done publicly? Jesus told the lepers He healed to keep quiet about it, but just go show themselves to the priests, no? Is EVERY single miracle of healing that He or the Apostles did recorded? Absolutely not. So what is wrong with keeping these things quiet? Is it necessary for some reason for them to be made public?

**The successors of the apostles are the BISHOPS, not the College of Cardinals. Not all cardinals are necessarily bishops.

And just what do you think the Sacrament of Unction is all about?

You might want to consider 1 Cor 12:

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

The answer to all these rhetorical questions is clearly, “NO!,” even in St. Paul’s time.**

I was always under the impression that it was only the Apostles who receive the explicit gifts of being able to heal the sick, raise the dead) and that their successors received the Holy Ghost (Spirit) through the imposition of hands, which gave them the assurance of preaching the Truth, but not the prerogatives of the Apostles (actual physical healing, etc).

Catholic Encyclopedia regarding Bishops:

"They are the successors of the Apostles, though they do not possess all the prerogatives of the latter. (Council of Trent, Sess. XXIII, ch. iv; can. vi, vii. See APOSTOLIC COLLEGE.) "

Perhaps I misunderstand the term “perogatives,” but I always assumed that these extra supernatural gifts were given to the Apostles so that they would have the tools necessary to more effectively spread a brand new faith, and that once established practice, the sacraments by their very nature were sufficient to foster the growth of the faith.

Of course, this doesn’t limit God’s ability to directly intervene through special charisms (tongues, stigmata, etc.), but that my understanding was that only the Apostles had extraordinary graces/gifts ipso facto, and that after them, the ordinary form of receiving grace/healing was through the Church and the Sacraments.

I have heard that Saint Dominic was once being shown through the papal treasuries. His Guide pointed out that no longer need Peter sayI have no silver and gold. To which Saint Dominic replied that he hadn’t heard him sayin the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk recently either. 😃

We have a healing service once a year for all of the infirm…Anyone can call the priest and ask him to administer this at anytime…It is called the sacrament of the sick

We call our yearly mass the Mass of the anointing…Heaps of people with health problems come to this mass

Who said they ever stopped? It’s the first I ever heard about it:confused:

You are under the wrong impression Padre Pio restored the sight to 2 people…One was Gemma Di Giorgio who was born without pupils…no one understand how she can see but she does gogle her name

He restored an eye to someone that had lost his in an explosion…When the Dr saw the restored eye he converted to catholicism

Pio healed many many people, including and old childhood friend of John Paul II…When she was dying with cancer Karol wrote to Pio asking for him to pray for her…Her cancer miraculously disappeared after Pio prayed for her

Wow! God be praised!
I don’t deny that miraculous healing can and does still occur - I just thought that it became less of a “normal” thing after the aposolic age, that’s all.
