I would add that the flap over indulgences was at best over scrupulosity and more likely a smoke screen for power politics. I’m quite thankful for indulgences. It has kept our marriage together as it does every marriage. Imagine life without indulgences. For that matter is any indulgence truely free? Think about it.

I challenge you to go to Rome someday and enter this structure built to the honor and glory of God
Agreed. A vacation in Rome sounds great. Please send first class tickets asap. 🙂
No offence to you, Timmy Z., because I don’t know why you are handing out your tripe: but ignorance coupled with bad will tend to lie behind such accusations as yours and those I mention above, currently being handed around and relished inside certain introverted Protestant circles.
As any discussion of the RCC must flow from ignorance and ill will.

What is the purpose of this forum? Why must any dissenter or questioner have his character maligned?
I also recommend you spend some time here on the Forums looking and learning before you unload. It would be responsible for you to do independent research from Catholic sources–it’s only fair since it seems you have allowed yourself to be wide open to biased anti-Catholic slander.
I am ignorant, please enlighten me on where I have erred. The basilica was finance in part by the sale of indulgences. This lead in no small part to schism. The “capitol” of the “one, holy, universal” church lead to schism (am I the only one that sees irony there?). I thought it would be a good thread.

Thanks,

if you look back on the biography of many of the saints, many of them were “reformers” of the church. luther’s reform was not of the church. basically the church is always in need of reform in some corner or another. it is a divine institution run by humans here on earth. humans make mistakes.

st. peters basilica and all of the other cathedrals of the world were built to the glory of God as some one else has already mentioned.

jesus also said the poor will always be with you. so selling off the church’s wealth won’t solve that “problem”. jesus is physically present in every catholic church. why shouldn’t he have an awesome abode?

Allow me…[SIGN]No Sale On Here[/SIGN]

“In the first place, his teaching regarding the indulgences for the living was correct. The charge that the forgiveness of sins was sold for money regardless of contrition or that absolution for sins to be committed in the future could be purchased is baseless. An indulgence, he writes, can be applied only “to the pains of sin which are confessed and for which there is contrition”. “No one”, he furthermore adds, “secures an indulgence unless he have true contrition”. The confessional letters (confessionalia) could of course be obtained for a mere pecuniary consideration without demanding contrition. But such document did not secure an indulgence. It was simply a permit to select a proper confessor, who only after a contrite confession would absolve from sin and reserved cases, and who possessed at the same time facilities to impart the plenary indulgence (Paulus, “Johann Tetzel”, 103).” - NA

Did you want to address my explanation of the “Reformation”.

Ever wonder why Erasmus, a far greater thinker and theologian than Luther, never broke from the Church.

The “Reformation” was a German political movement. The Church would have fixed herself without schism if not for the greed and power hunger of some German Princes and the power hunger of a few men like Luther, Zwingli, Calvin etc.

God Bless

Timmy Z,

Without even considering whether you are anti-Catholic or not (only you know that… I don’t think any of my Catholic brothers on this forum have been gifted with ESP), I’ll give into your argument and say St. Peter’s Basilica was completely financed by corrupt officials like Tetzel.

My response is so what. It just proves that God can take a great evil and make a greater good out of it!!! Praise the Lord!!!

Isn’t this what happened with St. Stephens stoning in Acts? Didn’t the early Church spread throughout Judea because the Hellenist Christians vacated Jerusalem and began to spread the Good News!

God allows fools and idiots to run His Church and the Church still stands! Isn’t this a testament to His Promises, rather than a condemnation of His Church?

In addition to my last post, it is with great sorrow that any schism came about. Did Catholics contribute to it… probably so. Does that give anyone the right to leave the Church that Christ built?

I don’t think so!

This probably isn’t the right thread, but people have talked about it here. Why do Protestants assume that ALL “reformers” were kicked out of the Church? Why isn’t it accepted that many many “reformers” did just that, and stayed within the Church?
