Here is the new St. Peter’s altar set-up when Pope Benedict XVI celebrated a Mass for the deceased Bishops. The Pope’s new MC, the Rev. G. Marini, was with him during the Mass according to the OF.
I hope every Catholic Churches in the whole world set-up their altars like this eventhough it is ad populum. Six candle stands, three in each side, and a crucifix in the middle.

Where is that altar in St. Peter’s? I am having trouble placing it given the background, etc.

It is the Altar of the Chair, in the apse of St. Peters, in front of the “Chair of Peter”, Bernini’s Cathedra Petri.

It’s too bad they tore out the beautiful altar designed by Bernini. That new one is a bit… strange. It reminds me of a spider’s web.

The first time I looked at the Altar, I thought: Why is the Altar too porous?

I’ve also heard that the former Altar in place was not actually designed by Bernini but might have been put there in the 1930’s; In Bernini’s day, a temporary Altar might have been put in place for Masses while in other occasions, the dais might have been used as a platform for the Pope’s Cathedra.

The “Spider Web” altar may have been designed in the style of this sculpture of the Resurrection that is there at the Vatican somewhere (I believe). I couldn’t find a picture of it… I wish I could because I really think it’s a wonderful sculpture… I think it captures the mystery and awe of the Resurrection wonderfully.

i always like the six candle stands, is very beautiful. but in my churches that’s no such beautiful candle stands…

Here’s the sculpture. I can’t find a full image of it - it’s much wider and bigger than it appears here:

Where is that sculpture located? I remember having a glimpse of that during the EWTN-televised Wednesday Audiences (JPII was in Pontificate then). From what I remember, it’s really a HUGE piece of sculpture.

The original high altar is still there. This altar is located behind the high altar under the Holy Spirit window.

I have never liked that sculpture.
I guess it’s a matter of personal taste,
but I find it hideous and an insult to
the grandeur and glory of Christ.

I thought so too, at first, but the one day I looked at it and I just saw in it, well, the Resurrection. I saw the… well the muck, gunk, the indescribable… whatever that is that He is rising from, and it just struck me as a wonderful depiction of what it is to rise from death. I mean really, how does one depict death, in all its real, spiritual meaning, in a physical sculpture? I guess to me, this one does it pretty well. 🤷
