Why does it matter?

1.) I didn’t think your church made it a matter of dogma as to where Peter was buried. He could have been the first bishop of Rome and left for some reason and died before returning to Rome.

2.) The first poster said something about how the claim to Roman primacy is based on Peter dying there. How does the location of Peter’s death matter one way or the other?
I don’t get this part myself…I believe that Peter was Bishop of Rome. I have no problem with that. In fact, I was taught that, growing up, in a Free Methodist Sunday school.
Yet, I see people try to deny it. Now, that is something worth the energy to debate it.
But, where Peter may (or may not) have been buried?? Personally, I think that those are Peter’s remains, under St Peter’s Basilica. But, if somehow (a;) time machine??), we managed to go back, & find out that he was buried in Jerusalem…So what??? If Pope John Paul 2 had died in, say, Fatima, would that have made him any less the pope??? Of course not. And in ancient days, you were pretty much buried where you were when you died. (Not always, but the details may be  TMI).
So, on the one hand, I think the evidence shows that Peter is buried in Rome.
I just don’t think that the whole Catholic Church rises or falls on where he was buried.
There are,:o forgive me, but there (IMO) are far bigger fish to fry.

First we had James’ ossuary, supposedly proving he was true brother of Christ…Mary had other children.

Then Peter’s tomb in Jerusalem.

Finally and more recently, Christ’s tomb with bones and entire family.

Anti-Catholic Protestants will go with the first two. Obviously not the third. Yet all are based on the same kinds of “proof.”

Why are people claimig this nonsense is proof? This is like finding brown hay in a haystack your going to find a lot of Simon Bar Jonahs ossuaries buried throughout Israel. The fact the Franciscans have known and excavated the site and never gave it a second thought is never mentioned. Even scripture gives us some evidence that Kepha as Peter’s known and used name from his ministry from Pentacost onward. It would be weird for his followers to go burry him and use a name they never new him by. And there is that pesky thing called history all curch writings are unanimous Peter went to Rome and died to Rome even legitamate protestant historians will give us that one heck all the Orthodox communities will give us that one despite our disagreement on the Papacy. Not a one church father even hinted at Peter dying in Jerusalem even the Bible attest to Jerusalem being the Bishopric of James. Plus since Peter’s death there has been a pilgrimage at the Vatican Way for 2000 years and there never was a pilgrimage at any point of Christian history in Jerusalem for St Peter someone forgot to give the early christians a memo concerning this.
THis is much like Jesus being the Son of Joseph on the ossuary when all his followers referred to him not as the Son of Joseph but the Son of Mary. His detractors and enemies would bring up the Joseph carpenter info as to somehow demean his humble roots his followers on the other hand emphasized the virgin birth by being labeled as the only Son of Mary, singular a note our protestant brethren should pay attention too. I remember they jumped on the James Ossuary bandwagon as for proof James was his blood brother but alas it appears it is from the origian of deception that claims this otehr heretical nonsense. More proof when you join forces against the catholic church you are joining forces with those who oppose Christ.

I just love this inscription:

“PETRUS ROGA CHRISTUS JESU PRO SANCTIS HOMINIBUS CRESTIANUS AD CORPUS TUUM SEPULTIS”

This translates as:

“Peter pray Christ Jesus for the holy Christian men buried near your body”

Early Christians praying to a Saint to ask intercession for the dead. How Catholic!
Brilliant!

There was a funny editorial cartoon in my local paper yesterday. There was a guy claiming to have found the coffins of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. However, the inscriptions on the side of the coffins were Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Anna Nichole Smith. 😃

I feel like I am committing a Sin, like St. Thomas. I will pray for Gods forgiveness. I come from a VERY Catholic family with an Uncle who is an Italian Priest and good Friend who is an OMI Priest. I was reasearching St Peter and got blasted by “hater sites”. I Started following a post t about St. Peters tomb that led me to register here. I have read what the haters case was and it seems strong that Peter was not in Rome. Some Person said what I am saying on this site, (different thread) and was “banned”. He could have been banned for a different post but I still got “the willies” 🙂 I can see through the haters and propaganda but the Bible seems to put Peter elsewhere. I am no Sheep. Not to the haters, OR the Church. I follow the words, actions and teachings of Jesus as best I can and Jesus alone. I do not need a Priest or Pope to interpet them for me. I ask Questions and make my own decision. I love and respect All of the Priests and The Holy Father… The hardest thing I heard from the haters had nothing to do with St. Peter. It made me think that I would be struck by lightning. The Apostle Creed goes. We believe in Jesus Christ, the ONLY son of God…" Jesus taught us,in his own words, how to Pray. “OUR FATHER who art in Heaven…” I am distressed of the contridiction and wonder why the word ONLY was added in the first place. I Love the Catholic Church…Could someone help me? Please don’t ban me. Sorry about my spelling I haven’t downloaded the check yet.
Peace

As has been stated, in the long run it matters not a bit where St Peter lived or was buried - the Popes lived in Avignon for a time, and St Peter was bishop of many other places. It is not requirement that the Pope also be Bishop of Rome, simply tradition that links the two offices.

And that ‘only’ is completely scriptural, and so not any mere invention or addition of men - John 3:16 “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son”

The reason Jesus is called the only son is that we are all God’s children only by virtue of being adopted as members of the body of Christ, the only begotten. Our relationship comes only through Him.
