I was wondering if any of you know of a place online (bookstore or otherwise) where I can find the following works by St. Robert Bellarmine:

The Disputations (his great apologetic work against Protestants)

De Romano Pontificis (a book written on the temporal and spiritual power of the Pope).

Christian Doctrine (I’m not sure of the exact title, but it is a catechism that the Jesuits used for years all over the world).

The reason I ask is because many people in traditional circles use Bellarmine’s writings to justify their own positions. Much of what I hear is quoted out of context and while there are translations of portion of these works, I am not sure that excerpts will work. I guess I’m one of those people that the needs the whole in order to understand the parts.

Also, Bellarmine’s works seem to be relatively scarce. Aside from the works that were translated in the Classics of Western Spirituality Series, I haven’t really found much of anything except pamphlets here and there. Also, my Latin is not good enough for me to read Bellarmine’s writings.

Anyway, if any of you know of a place where I can find these. Please let me know.

Most are no longer published in English. I have a friedn who works for a university library that pretty much as every book of any significance ever written, so I can check them out from there. His book on government, De Laicis (sp?) used to be online at the CMRI website and it may still be (that site is run by a dissident group, so be cautious).

However, it’s not his best work as some of his ideas on the bestowal of authority run contrary to the ideas of St. Thomas, which were adopted by Popes such as Leo XIII, St. Pius X, and Bl. John XXIII. Essentially he says that authority is first given to the people and then they bestow it on whoever governs. St. Pius X said this reasoning that authority goes down then up is absurd and rather it goes from the top down only. While the people may get to choose who wields the authority, the authority to govern is bestowed directly by God. It’s a subtle but important difference.

Thanks for the tip.

You are right about some of the works not being available in English anymore. For the most part, people will just cite them endlessly, but nobody has republished them. It would be nice if we had them.

As far as the thing on the CMRI site, they have part of his book on the Popes. I read it, but I wouldn’t touch anything they publish with a ten foot pole because of their position.

St. Robert Bellarmine is dear to me, since he is my patron saint. Finding many books written by him has proven difficult. In addition to the Classics of Western Spirituality book, some books by St. Robert Bellarmine available through Amazon and other book sellers:

Here is a really good devotional work by him completely online “Seven Words from the Cross.”

I also recommend the one on dying well (which is really about living) and also “The Mind’s Ascent unto God by a Ladder of Created Things.” 👍
