St. Teresa of Calcutta

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Perhaps some of you were able to watch the TV coverage of the canonization yesterday of St. Teresa of Calcutta, and/or see and hear some of the interviews of people who lived and worked with her. The man who was miraculously healed by St. Teresa of Calcutta’s intercession and his wife and child were also interviewed. What encouragement the Church and the world was offered yesterday and will continue to be offered through the intercession of St. Teresa of Calcutta!

If you were unable to share in any of the events over the weekend, I would recommend two books that I found very helpful:

1. Come be my Light by the present Superior General of the Missionary of Charity priests.
2. Mother Teresa in the Shadow of Our Lady by the co-founder with Mother Theresa of the Missionary of Charity priests.
   The value in both books was, for me, words of St. Teresa herself, shared with these two priests. In the first one, there is this quote:

“If I ever become a Saint–I will surely be one of “darkness.” I will continually be absent from Heaven–to light the light of those in darkness on earth.”
–Mother Teresa of Calcutta

In the second book, Father Langford (now deceased) described the visions that Mother Teresa had of Jesus and Mary. Mother revealed these to Father before her death, and told him that someday he may need to share them. A quote from his book is:

“Stay very close to Our Lady. If you do this, you can do great things for God and the good of people.” – Mother Teresa of Calcutta

In the second book also Father Langford describes Mother Teresa’s encouragement to her sisters to consecrate themselves totally to Jesus through Mary using St. Louis De Montfort’s little treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us to be as Mary and you were: bringing the Light of Christ into a dark world.

Can you tell me whose words these are in your reply, and where you found them? Are they words of St. Theresa of Calcutta? or ??? Can you tell me where you read or heard them these words? Thanks. It always helps to know the source

Thanks, GLam, for your willingness to share that grace with us. May the Lord continue to bless and guide you, and all of us, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of our Mother Mary, Mother Teresa and all our angels and Saints. All those who follow Jesus will suffer in this world, as He did, but He has conquered death and sin and has given us His Holy Spirit to bring us to our Eternal Home.

I was shaken quite badly by Superstorm Sandy … my home was destroyed … and I didn’t return to church until last week when the spirit of Mother Teresa seemed to spur me on to rededicate myself to Christ … I finally returned to Church and the Sacrament of Confession on September 4 … I have a lot to do to get right with our Lord … but it’s a beginning. Thank you Mother Teresa

The quote is taken from the book “Come be My Light”. How beautiful that you were able to receive the sacrament of Confession on the vigil of her Canonization! Now you and all of us, by God’s Grace, need to let Jesus be our Light for others as Mother Teresa did.

Yesterday I wrote to someone on another Forum that Mother Teresa and the servant of God Frank Duff had a lot in common. Frank Duff is the founder of the Legion of Mary and his cause for canonization is in Rome as well as two younger Legion members, Venerable Edel Quinn and Servant of God Alphonsus Lamb. Both founders consecrated themselves to Jesus through Mary and both had a heart for reaching those who were “unloved and uncared for”.

Today is the vigil of the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, and also the date on which the Legion of Mary was founded. (Sept. 7, 1921) Tomorrow we celebrate Mary’s being born into this world (although we don’t know the actual calendar date.). Like Mother Teresa’s Misionaries of Charity founded to seek out and care for the poorest of the poor, the Legion of Mary as a Lay apostolate seeks to bring Jesus through Mary to those in spiritually poor, especially. The Legion began visiting the sick but soon Fran Duff discovered the greater need is among those sick, not so much in body, as sick in their souls.

His story and the story of Mary’s Legion is another story of God’s Love for us. Katherine, if you are interested in praying for and working to help other persons come home to the Cathlic Faith, you may want to read more about Frank Duff see HERE and the Legion. HERE. Your Parish Office can let you know if there is a group of Legion members in your parish or they can give you a phnoe number or e-mail address to contact your Diocesan Office for the Legion of Mary closest to your location. Guests are always welcome at Legion meetings.

We are blessed in order that we may bless others. You have come home to the Catholic Church and now God wants you to continue to grow in holiness, to grow in grace as Mary our Mother and St. Teresa of Calcutta and all the saints have done. The church exists to carry on the Good News of Jesus. By His Grace let us carry Him to others, by the power of His Holy Spirit as Mary and all the saints have done before us. Thanks for saying your “Yes” to God’s call to come Hime, now may you continue in His Grace to help others.

Thanks, yes, I read it twice and may go back and read it again. The other Book I recommended is also a blessing, written by the co-founder with Mother Teresa of her Missionary of Charity priests. This book is titled, “Mother Teresa: In the Shadow of Our Lady” written by Father Joseph Langford, MC. For more on this book, see HERE
