Hello all 🙂

My daughter and I are looking all over the internet for St Therese’s quote on being willing to go to Hell if it means at least one person could love Him from there.

Can anyone please give me a citation??? I know I’ve read it, yet I can’t find it, and it’s driving me crazy!

Thank you!

I have read a lot about St. Therese, including her autobiography “The Story of a Soul” and I have never come across her saying anything like that.

However, it brings to mind something St. Francis de Sales said during a time of “darkness” in his prayer life. At that time there was raging a battle with regard to Calvinism.

St. Francis de Sales was tempted to believe that he was damned and there was no hope for him. In his prayer he cried out to the Lord that if this were so then to allow him to praise the Lord from hell. After he said that the darkness lifted.

St. Francis de Sales was an instrument for conversion back to the Catholic Church of many Calvinists!

I will see if I can find that information on the internet for you.

After almost one half hour of searching I could not find that particular quote, and had to stop I remember it clearly spoken of by a priest at a retreat I attended. I heard it from more than one place as well.

Perhaps someone else has heard of it and knows how to find it?

Story of a Soul, page 54:

“One evening, not knowing in what words to tell Our Lord how much I loved him, and how much I wished that He was served and honoured everywhere, I thought sorrowfully that from the depths of hell there does not go up to Him one single act of love. Then, from my inmost heart, I cried out that I would gladly be cast into that place of torment and blasphemy so that He might be eternally loved even there.”

Wow! Thank you. I certainly missed that. What a deep longing from one of my favorite saints!

Thanks for the citation, I’ll have to pick up that book… I can’t even contemplate that kind of love…

And thank you, everyone else, for trying!

Bolinstephen, thanks for the link on St. Theresa of Avila. She is another powerhouse saint I love to read about.
