Vatican City, Jan 8, 2008 / 05:16 pm (CNA).-

Cardinal Saraiva Martins also revealed the beatification, latter this year, of the parents of St, Therese of Lisieux, Louis Martin and Azelia Guérin. The heroic virtues of the parents of St. Therese, who is now one of the most popular saints in the Catholic Church and a Doctor of the Church, were proclaimed on March 26, 1994.

Cardinal Saraiva implied that the miracle needed to proclaim them Blessed has been approved by his congregation, and will be announced at the next Consistory.

St. Thérèse’s Parents’ Remains to Be Moved

LISIEUX, France, MAY 8, 2008 (Zenit.org).- As the process for the beatification of the parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux gets closer, the bodies of Louis and Zélie Martin are being exhumed and moved into the crypt of the basilica dedicated to their daughter.

Louis (1823-1894) and Zelie (1831-1877) Martin are the parents of St. Thérèse, who was proclaimed a doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Married in 1858, the Martins had nine children. Four died in infancy and five entered the religious life.

The recovery of a newborn in the Italian city of Monza, currently under investigation by the Congregation for the Saints’ Causes, has been attributed to the Martins as a miraculous cure after the infant’s family prayed for their intercession.

In March 1994, John Paul II proclaimed the Martin spouses venerable. They might soon be the second married couple to be beatified simultaneously. Luigi and Maria Beltrame Quattrocchi were beatified in October 2001.

Letters to St. Therese on above link.
Louis Martin, St. Thérèse’s father, was regarded as a saint in his lifetime.

The last seven years of his life were marked by a severe trial, for him and for his daughters who loved him dearly. In 1887 he suffered several strokes which led to mental paralysis. Confined at first to a mental hospital, he was then cared by his daughter Céline until his death on 29 July 1894

.
On 26 March 1994 Pope John Paul II declared Louis Martin and Thérèse’s mother, Zélie Martin, “Venerable”, the first step toward canonization.

Wonderful News!!! St. Therese is my patron saint and I have also had a devotion to her father as well.👍

Praise God for the lives of Louis and Zelie Martin! They nurtured the virtue of holiness within their entire family. And Louis, (after the death of his dear wife) had a particular “challenge” to his own virtue (which he met, beautifully)… in raising the 5 surviving children… and encouraging such holiness in their lives.

I would be particurlarly grateful to God… to one day see Celine, raised to the honors of the Church; (Celine lived in the same community with her sister, St. Therese). I pray to her sometimes… as she too, undertook the role of Caregiver to their dear father, Louis. I ask her to share her patience and strength with me. Celine Martin is a model for all Caregivers. Thanks for sharing this information, Barb.
