In his sermon this morning, our priest pointed out that with all the controvesy about using the word “Christmas” this year, isn’t it funny that no one has a problem with St. Valentines day (a Catholic saint)

Unfortunately, your priest is behind the curve on this one. There are efforts by some to rename St. Valentine’s Day to the “February Day of Love.” Such PC madness just keeps getting madder and madder. We can only hope this one will be laughed down and stay put down where it belongs!

Not to mention, that hardley anyone - even catholics - say “Happy SAINT Valentine’s Day”… usually just Happy Valentines Day.

I resolve from now on to say in response…“Thank you, and a Happy Saint Cyril Methodius Day to you” 😃

Well, apparently there was a front page article in my local paper on how there isn’t even a St. Valentine - he was taken off the Calendar. I haven’t seen the article so can’t say for sure what it said but my 25 yo daughter read it and was really upset. I told her that some Saints had their names removed from the calendar more because there wasn’t room for them than because they didn’t exist - the modern Saints were replacing them so to speak.

I’ve never heard of this “February Day of Love”, is it a particularly new PC attack on Christian celebrations?

That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll use that the rest of the day?

Actually, St. Valentine wasn’t removed from the calendar because of lack of space. He was removed from the universal liturgical calendar because not much is known about his life, just like St. Christopher. Our friendly, neighbourhood apologist, Michelle Arnold, was asked this particular question and provided this answer.

At daily mass this mornining, the celebrating priest mentioned St. Valentine and asked his intercession. He just was not mentioned in the eucharistic prayer and the prayers at the beginning and end of mass. Instead Sts. Cyril and Methodius were mentioned. I started to call February 14th St. Valentine’s Day, just as soon as I found out that it all started because the church honored the patron Saint of Love on this day. If secular America has no problem with calling March 17th St. Patrick’s Day, then they shouldn’t have a problem calling Feburary 14th St. Valentine’s Day.

From what I have read, February the 14th just happened to be the day which people in Europe happened to note that the birds began to meet togeather for their so called spring fling. It was this concept which gave rise to the idea of people giving love letters and the such to each other. This day just happened to fall on the feast of St. Valentine. If it had fallen on say St. Philomenia would we then be say happy Philomenia day? 😃

I have heard another account, though similar to your own:

Fr. Valentius (Valentine) was a priest who secretly wedded couples together during emperor Claudius’ ban on marriages in order to encourage more army recruits. The emperor found out about the father’s secret weddings, captured him, and tried to persuade him to convert to paganism. When Valentine refused, and even tried to convert the emperor, Claudius had him stoned and beheaded. During the days that St. Valentine was imprisoned, he wrote a letter to the blind daughter of the jailer and signed the farewell “From your Valentine”.

Has anyone else heard this rendition of the story?

Yes, and while he was in jail he converted the jailer and his daughter, whom he cured from blindness.

Psalm45:9:
Yes, and while he was in jail he converted the jailer and his daughter, whom he cured from blindness.
Interesting. I didn’t know that he cured and converted them. It sounds like St. Valentine was quite the person, though all saints are of course.

That makes me laugh! Can you imagine a secular newspaper writing that the Vatican declared them a non-saint! I wouldn’t be surprised to see such an article.
