As you may know St. Valentine’s day is coming up in about two weeks.

What do you think about the traditions that have developed regarding Valentine’s day particularly in the US, but also in other parts of the (western) world? Are you personally celebrating the day with your spouse, or will you even surprise a “valentine” who doesn’t know your interest in them? If so, maybe you can share what you have planned or what you have done in the past.

I would love to read some romantic valentine stories and ideas 🙂

But even if you’re not participating in the typical traditions or activities of this day, please also share your thoughts on it if you like.

Ufff… thanks!

Anyway. It’s hard to say. IMHO there’s nothing wrong with a cheesy holiday for lovey-doveys if it doesn’t manage to violate objective morality.

But, from a psychological point of view (or rather a garden variety thereof), there are some pitfalls, mostly connected with the pressure to find a date, spend it with someone, rush a date or relationship you’d otherwise skip or take more slowly.

I also personally dislike the notion of spending St. Valentine’s date with a date who is only your date for St. Valentine’s, basically a token girl or guy. IMHO, either you’re in love or not, either seeing someone or not. Sure, you can take a friend of either sex and have a toast to relationships or something along those lines. But no pretend-dates.

As for myself, I’ll raise a glass of whisky to all my exes and could-have beens in good cheer.

After almost 25 years of marriage, we smile indulgently at the “kids” who rush to spend 5 times the amount of money a box of chocolates, a rose, and a steak dinner would normally cost a week before or after the holiday, and think “wait till you grow up and you realize that it’s more about taking out the trash, listening to each other when you ask ‘How was your day?’, and going out of your way to bring home a McDonald’s caramel sundae for $1 just because he/she said it’s been awhile since they had one.”

It is a silly old-fashioned Victorian holiday–yes, it dates back to Chaucer’s time, but this is a holiday hung with about as many Victorian trappings as one can hang on a single day–and an excuse for giving out candies and flowers and paper tokens of affection. It ought to be kept sweet and fun, without too much being made of it.

I have no problem with the Valentine’s Day sentiment I heard was distributed to their classemates and teachers by some middle-school Red Sox fans awhile back. It read something like this:

46 Days Until
Opening Day…
Try to Have a
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Anyway!

They saw it as a good reason to indulge in some red-wrapped chocolates, and nothing more! Those who want to leave it alone ought to be able to leave it alone or to leave part of it alone without being made out to be the Ebeneezer Scrooges of romance, and those who want to have fun with it can be left alone, too. As Chevelier says, the only caveat is the usual caution for any holiday, which is to mind that moderation is observed and virtue is not given the day off!

Anyone who gets their nose bent out of joint because their partner balks at paying three times the normal price in order to get red roses in the house should be stoned with milk chocolate creams…which never killed anyone.

Buy a woman red roses these days and you’ll find a restraining order in your mail first thing in the morning. 😛

Which is kinda cool because I love litigation anyway. Makes me feel more alive and all.

February 15 is Restraining Order Day? I did not know that.
(FTD’s Dirty Little Secret… 😛 :D)

This Valentines Day I will be spending with a great group of awesome guys discerning the priesthood. Our parish priest started a group called the Melchizedek project that meets once a month on Thursdays, and he planned it for the 14th and said,“Well, none of you will be busy anyway!”

Many saints days had cultural or other activities around them, and that seems good to me - in most cases. It provided faith with an opportunity to engage with some day to day life.

Valentine’s day needs a bit of revisiting to explore what faith says about romantic love - and why St Valentine!

But encourage it, encourage faith to interact with it - use it for evangelisation if possible 🙂

Bring on the chocolate, I’ll keep it 'til Sunday because it will be Lent.❤️

I’m a fan of day-after-holiday sales…on chocolate!!

Whenever people mention St. Valentine’s Day, my husband and I puzzled and then inquire, “You mean St. Cyril and Methodius Day?”

Anyhow, we may be busy birthing our first baby that day! 🙂

I don’t like being told that I MUST be romantic on any certain day, and I REALLY dislike being manipulated into buying cards and candy “just because” it’s some commercial “holiday.”

I always told hubby that he had a permanent pass on Valentines’ Day IF (and it’s a HUGE IF) he did random romantic things the rest of the year.

So far, he owes me about 1,000,000 random acts of romance. Thus, his pass has been revoked.

It is very sided towards women in our society. My FH and I are planning to make dinner together, curl up, and watch a movie. And that’s it. For us it’s more about setting aside our usual busy lives to connect with each other.

My husband and I have been together for a total of 18 years. We’re past the “need” for a big production. I tell my husband he has to acknowledge the day, but I am content with a sweet card.

 Probably I will lift a glass for myself.
Cheesy, eh?!

Hence, the oft said comparison: It is the Superbowl for women.

Interesting… and you do what for* him,* may I ask?

Congratulations that’s awesome!

I don’t see how that’s a bad thing?
Because it is not an equitable thing. Did you know most phone calls are made on Mother’s Day? And! Most collect calls are made on Father’s day!

🤷 Wassup wi dat!?

It is about time the women start to pony up! 👍

My darling and I have been married for over 15 years. I love St. Valentine’s Day! I make him a strawberry cheesecake (at various points in our marriage I made red velvet cake, but he prefers the cheesecake now), and we try to go on a little date around then. It doesn’t matter what. We just like the time set aside for each other. <3 <3
