University of San Francisco faculty members join ‘woman deacon’ on California Bay Area public radio to discuss homosexuality and the Catholic Church
The Catholic Church is an anti-woman and homophobic institution requiring theological transformation, two faculty members from the Jesuit-run University of San Francisco and a member of the Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement agreed during a pre-Christmas program broadcast on a San Francisco Bay Area public radio station.
The hour-long Dec. 12 program was broadcast as part of KALW radio’s “City Vision” series and addressed the topic “Far from Rome: Being Gay and Catholic in the Bay Area.”
The invited guests were Fr. Donal Godfrey, Associate Director of University Ministry at the University of San Francisco, a Jesuit priest and the author of Gays and Grays: The Story of the Gay Community at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church; the Rev. Vincent Pizzuto, Associate Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Francisco and an ordained priest in the Celtic Christian Church; and Christine Fahrenbach, an “ordained deacon” and member of the Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement who once co-led a gay and lesbian ministry at a Santa Cruz parish in the Diocese of Monterey, Califonia. While serving in that capacity, she said, she received “a lot of support from the pastor and some support from the former bishop down there.”
