Stan Swamy: The oldest person to be accused of terrorism in India

Soutik Biswas India correspondent

On Thursday evening, detectives from India’s National Investigation Agency arrived in an SUV at a red and white building on the outskirts of Ranchi in India’s eastern state of Jharkhand.

There they picked up Father Stan Swamy, an ailing 83-year-old activist and Jesuit priest. They seized his mobile phone and asked him to pack a bag. They then drove him to the airport and boarded a flight to Mumbai, where Father Swamy was remanded to judicial custody until 23 October.

He is now the oldest person to be accused of terrorism in India.
I read the article, I understand what this is about but I don’t think I would do justice to the story to somehow try to summarize what it says. Pictures of protesters at link.

Maybe someone with some more in-depth knowledge on this, someone from India or other will comment as well as everyone else being welcomed to do so.

To me, it certainly does not sound like he consorted with the “Maoist” guerrillas. They have been a problem over there for a long time.

Here is a bit more, in short, he says this is to “muzzle voices” of dissent.:

Thiruvananthapuram:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday termed as “unfortunate” the arrest of tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr Stan Swamy for his alleged involvement in inciting a mob to violence in Bhima Koregaon near Pune on January 1, 2018.

Mr Vijayan said the arrest of Mr Swamy, who has been supporting the Tribal agitations for land and their rights inside the forest, was a move to muzzle the dissenting voices.

“It’s unfortunate that Tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr Stan Swamy was arrested and jailed. He has been working among the Tribals for decades. It’s against the principles of Indian Constitution to arrest those who raise their voice against the butchering of democratic rights of the Tribals,” Mr Vijayan said in a Facebook post.

The government isn’t doing itself any favors if this poor ailing priest should die in custody…they will just make a martyr of him. I hope they treat him with utmost kindness…I know some of the prisons in India are terrible!

By arresting him, the government is also bringing more attention to itself thus possibly help the priests cause!
