One reason that the Vatican shows little concern for the shortage of priests in the U.S. is that compared to other countires we already are well off.
John Allen of THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER writes that the U…S. has 6% of the world’s Catholics but 12% of its bishops and 14% of all priests. Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines all have more Catholics than the U.S. but their combined total of priests is only 37,000 while the U.S. alone has 41,000.
Americans also have more cars per capita, use more gasoline, eat more meat and generally enjoy a standard of living higher than the rest of the world. We accept without question our right to the good life. Isn’t it understandable that we expect a high standard of spiritual care?
