When I went to daily mass yesterday, the priest told everyone to stand around the altar. I wonder if this is in violation of liturgical law or not. Does anyone know about this?
See the following link dealing with children around the altar for the Our Father and you will see quotes that talk about the fact that the “presbyterium” during the Eucharistic prayer is reserved for the celbrant, concelebrants and altar ministers only. forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=39643
“During the liturgy of the Eucharist, only the presiding celebrant remains at the altar. The assembly of the faithful take their place in the Church outside the “presbyterium,” which is reserved for the celebrant or concelebrants and altar ministers.” [Notitiae 17 (1981) 61]
