Star Trek fans - What is your Favorite original Star Trek episode?

Just curious if there are any aficionados of the original Star Trek series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy out there. If so, just curious what your favorite episode or couple of episodes are and why.

Younger Generation, please forgive this indulgence of those of us who are old enough to remember the Star Trek original series that can still be seen on MeTV.

Ah, yes. Good choice. Very creative episode indeed, with a happy ending for Captain Pike, if I recall his name correctly.
 
“The Naked Time.”

Just as a side note, at one time my husband and I made a list of suggested episodes for friends who had never seen the show ( 😳) – we included the following:
  • “City on the Edge of Forever” (not my favorite but always hailed as fantastic)
  • “Amok Time”
  • “Space Seed”
I also have real fondness for episodes like “A Piece of the Action.” 🙂

The reason they even made that two part episode is because they were way behind on their shooting schedule and NBC needed shows to run. So they took the unaired first pilot with Captain Pike, shot some other scenes with Captain Kirk, and were able to crank out two episodes quickly to get NBC off their back.

Wow, you definitely know your episodes well. Any particular reason these episodes stand out?
 
I don’t have a favorite, but I remember when the series first aired. I was a preschooler. The episode with a giant hand appearing on the monitor followed by the disembodied talking head saying “do not bring that one, the one with the pointed ears” scared me so bad I remembered it for 40+ years till I was able to look it up online and determine it was called “Who Mourns for Adonais?”

Ah yes. The one with Apollo. I was a small boy then and it scared me a little, too. Watching it as an adult made me laugh at the 1960’s special effects compared to now.

“The Naked Time” is a great bottle episode, if you know the phrase. There’s a significant crisis, the pacing is fast, there’s a good mix of humor and drama, it’s fun to see characters essentially being drunk for a protracted period of time, and they discover time travel at the end of the episode. Doesn’t get better than that! I always like Spock’s line near the beginning, too: “It could be some sort of space madness we’ve never heard of.” Yikes!

“Amok Time” is great drama and it shows a totally different and atypical side of Spock. Plus you get the first real introduction to Vulcan life.

“Space Seed”… I mean, it’s Ricardo Montalban. He’s masterful in that episode. And, of course, it sets the stage for Star Trek II, which is just a fantastic movie in its own right.

“A Piece of the Action” is just ridiculous fun. 🙂
 
One of my favorites episodes includes ‘This Side of Paradise’ where Spock and others fall under the spell of spores that causes a normally stoic Spock to show emotion and be affectionate towards Jill Ireland’s character. It was good to have at least one episode in which he lets his guard down and shows his human side.

Yes, it did. I liked her in that role, although it was apparently very unlike her in real life.

Each time I see that episode, I think it’s a tiny bit sad that Kirk breaks Spock of the hold the spores have on him. He was genuinely happy living the farm life.
