Star Trek Polls Part 1: The Original Series

So many wonderful characters and I could only vote for one??

That show **defined ** ensemble cast to me.

I went with Montgomery Scott (I’m Scots on my dad’s side) for several reasons:
  1. He can fix anything. As a relatively cheerful incompetent when it comes to things mechanical, that trait is a big turn-on!
  2. Unlike Kirk who can be a prima donna, Sulu who was fairly bland during the series run, Uhura who despite being higher in the level of command than helm and navigation never took the chair when the others were out gallivanting, Spock and his vulnerable/stoic dichotomy, Chekov and the “russians did it all first” running gas, and even my second favorite McCoy who gave us a welcome dose of doctorly dyspepsia when things got too saccharine, Scotty had real character; humility without being a wimp; national pride without going overboard; command presence without being too pushy or too laid back (Kirk: OK, guys, which place are we going to go and break the Prime Directive for this episode?); humor without being silly. . .
 
McCoy: irrascible, stubborn, yet a razor-sharp mind

However,

Watching the re-mastered 1st series–and I wince at the howlers. It’s pretty obvious the actors wern’t taking things all that seriosuly, which is ok, because for the most part, the writing was awful—no wonder Bill Shatner got the “overacting” label, he was written that way!

Alright, they just wernt into series continuity at that time–but the sociology of the series was that of the 60’s itself–distilled by Roddenberry’s own biases
 
I liked Spock the best - I was twelve when I first started watching the show - just starting to become really self-conscious, and feeling like a total weirdo. I identified with him because he was the “different” one, and I also took him as a kind of a role model for dealing with various issues.

Of course I thought that the whole show was wonderful. I still think it’s one of the best kids’ shows ever made - there was a lot of space for the imagination - we used to write our own Star Trek stories, and role play Star Trek games in the yard when we were kids - great times! 👍

YES!!

Plus: The only character brave enough to wear a red shirt on a regular basis! :eek: :rotfl:

Bonus points to Uhura for often wearing a red dress (though sometimes gold) – And wearing it like no one else’s business (hubba-hubba) 😛

I think that was the quote McCoy used when he had to repair a wound in the rock creature who was injured. The creature was protecting her children from the miners of the mining planet.

Since I’ve never watched much Star Trek, I had my husband (who is a HUGE Star Trek fan) vote…he voted Spock and once viewing the poll results said he could have guessed the outcome :).
 
I voted for Scotty - he cannae change the laws of physics! (even though he was flying faster then the speed of light)
 
I can’t decide, I love them all!

One footnote I have to add though! I’m currently playing a computer game called “Civilization 4” (aka Civ 4) and Leonard Nimoy does the voice over in it including reading many bible quotes. I’ve read them before, but now all I hear is his voice when I think of them! I’d pay real money for him to do a full scripture reading on CD!

I just saw the episode “The Doomsday Machine” on TV Land, and noticed that Scotty’s accent disappears briefly - he’s telling Kirk which button to press to blow the ship up: “Thirty seconds later - POOF” in a plain old American accent.
 
That’s *Canadian * accent, my friend–Mr. Doohan was Canadian, like Mr. Shatner. When Mr. D. auditioned for the part (which was listed as “engineer”) he did it in several accents, and they liked the Scots best. “Montgomery” was, I believe, Mr. D’s own choice for his character’s first name.

I was watching “The Wrath of Khan” today at my brother’s (he just got the DVD set with all the original episodes plus the 8 movies. . .and we were watching on his big screen plasma with the surround sound–BETTER than the movie theatre. It strikes me that I really must visit my brother more often. . .
