Star Trek Polls Part 1: The Original Series

I voted for Spock, but I love them all – even the womanizing Kirk.

I really wish Uhura and Sulu had been given more scope for their characters. I believe Uhura was fourth in command, and I wish she had been allowed to take the conn at least once. One of my favorite episodes is the one where they get stuck in the alternate universe on the evil Enterprise – and one of the reasons is because (a) we get to see an evil Sulu (with too much eye shadow) and (b) Uhura gets to show what a tough cookie she can be.

I saw this movie on Spanish-language TV a while back, and as far as I could tell they did not dub Shatner’s famous line!
 
Spock was my choice because he was the most fascinating character and the first alien we got to know on TV we could not only like, but take seriously.

What a hard role for Leonard Nimoy to play! He had to define a whole race of people who would have to live up to his portrayal ever afterwards–not that anyone knew that at the time.

I loved all the characters, though, even Kirk, although he could be annoying and smarmy. McCoy was the codger with a heart and Scotty the brave soldier with brains, Uhura was the career woman struggling to get along in a man’s world and Sulu was the minority, whose abilities were still being ignored. Chekov was merely thrown in to get the interest of the hippie crowd, but Walter Koenig was a better actor than the part he got to play in ST. All in all, it was great fun, when I was an idealistic teenager and easily influenced by high-sounding ideas and new concepts. Sigh! Those were the days.

In Niven & Pournelle’s novel The Mote in God’s Eye* there is a Scots engineer who does the whole accent thing. One of his fellow officers asks him to cut it out, reminding him, “You speak Standard when get angry.”

The engineer replies, sans accent, “That’s a damned lie!!”😃

*the name given to an astronomical feature, no theological implications.
 
I voted for Spock, but I liked them all. What a series! It is head and shoulders above anything in science-fiction since.

Didymus - thatnks for posting that. I’ve read Niven’s Ringworld series and just recently got the bite for some more SF. I went to the library and ran across *The Mote in God’s *Eye and shied away from it because of the title. I decided on and just finished his A World Out Of Time (thorougly enjoyed it) and was looking for my next one. I came back to Mote because I’ve read elsewhere that people think that’s his best. I went and got it and opened it up and read the quote from Matthew and thought - this book’s gonna be calling God a hypocrite or something. But I thought I’d read it until it offended me. So now I know it’s NOT about that.

Oh, and I just read that part you quoted last night. :rotfl:

Actually I just caught part of an episode the other night and saw Uhura in the command chair. I wish I could remember the episode name or something, but I was just surfing past and thought “wow, she finally did get in the big chair.”

Glad you’re enjoying it. These books by Jerry Pournelle are set in the same future and precede Mote:
The Gripping Hand is a sequel to Mote. You have to like a futue history that includes the Church surviving the destruction of planet Earth.

No, not at all. All except King David’s Spaceship are set centuries before, actually start out in our own not-too-distant future, but they show what led to the destruction of Earth and the founding of the First Empire that they refer to in Mote.

King David’s Spaceship is set in (roughly) the same time as Mote but totally unrelated.
 
Thanks didymus! I was up til 2 this morning reading. I’m around maybe half-way through. I’m at the point where they’ve welcomed aboard the engineer motie and are trying to figure it out.

What strikes me about the story is the uniqueness of it. I think of everything I’ve read or watched and there’s nothing quite like this. The fact that the motie isn’t even symmetrical! I’m loving it!

Its hard to pick just one. I love them all so much. Had to go with Scotty for so many reason already mentioned above. Huge Trek / Sci-Fi fan, I have met all of the Original Series Cast except Deforest Kelly. Several of them multiple times. They are all great in person as well. Shatner gets a bad rap, based on his attitude in the early days of Trek Fandom, but we have to remember, before Trek, the world had never seen this type of devotional fandom. Atleast not outside of children. Dressing up in the costumes from the show, quoting lines, asking questions about every aspect of the show, for those based in reality to those that only the Real James Kirk could answer (What does it feel like to get Beamed to a planet?). Its not wonder he told us to “Get a life!”

Also had to pick Scotty because of the Actor James Doohan that brought him to life. Yes, the character was named for Jimmy’s Grandmother’s name. Roddenberry had original thought of an English Engineer named Reginald or something like that. I am so glad Jimmy won out with the scottish accent. Jimmy was a decorated veteran of WWII, being wounded in D-Day serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Trek Trivia… Scotty is missing the middle finger on his right hand. Jimmy lost in on D-Day when he was hit by German Machine Gun Fire. In Trouble with Tribbles, when he enters the mess hall, if you look real quick, you will see the missing finger as he holds the arm load of tribbles. Jimmy also loaned his voice to many of the faceless characters on the show, Tralene’s Father, the M-5 cmputer etc. He was also a very friendly man, sitting for hours and just talking about anything, as if he had known you all of his life, no matter who you were.

I was sadden to learn of his death, and I am still sadden at the loss. Jimmy, you will be missed…

I was in 6-8th grade when STOS was running-
1967-1969.
My best girlfriend and I used to play Star Trek scenarios as kids, too.
I liked all the characters, I don’t really have a favorite-but
I had a crush on Jim Kirk,
and My best girlfriend had a crush on Spock.

I have thought about reading the Mote in God’s eyes- read through the reviews on Amazon.com- does it have Christian themes in it?

Actually, Yeoman Rand also wore a red dress. And she’d get my vote if she were included. Gotta love the checkered hair do.
 
One thing I heard about James D. I saw him at a convention once. He said that if he could hear someone speak in an accent once for about five minutes, he could say anything he wanted in that accent (for the rest of his life).
