What/who is Kobayashi Maroo?

All i know is it is something from Star Trek. I may not have spelled it right either.

If I remember correctly, it is a name of a Japanese ship. It was featured in a supposedly no-win simulation that James Kirk cheated to win by reprogramming the simulation so the Klingons would co-operate. Kirk was the only one who “passed” the Kobayashi Maru test. If one attempts to rescue the ship, this will evoke the wrath of iracible Klingons, thus destroying the Enterprise. If you do not choose to rescue the Kobayashi Maru, you failed the mission.

This simulation was designed to test the character of those who are engaged in it.

Laconically, it’s a damned if you do, and a damned if you don’t scenario.

I do not believe that this is so.

Yes, the whole point of this test is to test the candidate in a no-win situation and see how they would handle it.

Choosing not to rescue the Kobayahi Maru should not illicit a failure as to not perform the rescue would honor the neutral zone between the Klingon Empire and the Federation which was set under a treaty, to violate that could cause interstellar war.

Which, quite frankly, the *Star Trek *universe could use a good deal more of.

Maybe they’d even be forced to introduce combat helmets.

Yes, the only thing I really liked about Enterprise were the MACOs.

I rember in the Star Fleet Academy game if you decide not to rescue the ship Admiral Kirk tears into you screaming how this reflected poorly on your character and to get out of his sight…

In analyzing the ship’s name, “maru” (literally, “round”) is a common second word in the name of Japanese ships. As for the Kobayashi part, as far as I can tell, the ship was names after Takeru Kobayashi, six-time winner of the Nathan’s hot-dog eating contest.

(Until someone else comes up with a better explanation 😛 )

What on earth are they/will they be ?

The only bad thing about Enterprise was its being cut short 😦 - it knocked the stuffing out of ST-TNG  (not that that is so difficult) ##

The Star Fleet roleplaying game had a Military Operations division within Star Fleet. The ships were more organized on a military theme and they had a unit of Star Fleet Marines attached. I could see that as what they would become.

The Temporal War thing was a bit bad in Enterprise but after they mopped that up it was pretty good.

oh and just in case you wanted to know it. It’s from “Star Trek 2:The Wrath Of Kahn”.

The film opens with Lt. Saavik(Kirstie Alley), sitting the test(although we don’t find out it’s a test until Kirk opens up the simulator).

I need help with my Star Trek question, concerning a scene from the TOS.

I’m not sure if the scene in question is from the TV show or one of the movies. It is definately TOS characters.

The scene-Spock, Kirk and Dr. McCoy are somehow back in time, circa 1970s or 80s. They are moving through a hospital, and Bones has his medical bag with him.

They pass a guy on gurney, obviously in bad shape, waiting for surgery. Bones scans him, then digs in his bag, taking out a pill. “Here take this, it will cure ya.”

A contempory doctor sees whats going on and steps in.

“Hey what are you doin? You can’t give him that!”

“shut up this guy is suffering from so and so, and has too much pressure on his brain.” (something like that)

“We know, how’d you know that? But anyway, we are gonna fix him up,”

“For God sakes man, you’re gonna drill a hole in is HEAD! This place is not a hospital it’s wood shop!” (or something similar.)

Do any of y’all recall the episode or movie?

That’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Thanks, I was way off. I’m gonna put it on my NetFlix list just so I can see that scene again. Bones was the best.

And that’s only a couple of the many great scenes in STIV. 👍

"You mean he’s just going to sit here in the bushes while we eat?"

“It’s his way.”

Actually, it was an old woman on the gurney and what McCoy gave her (she was waiting for her dialysis) was a pill which helped her regrow/renew her kidney. As they were running out with “Admiral Chekov” (as he was coming out under McCoy’s treatment Kirk asked him, “Name”, “Rank”, etc. and obviously he was still partly dreaming), the woman was sitting up very excited and called out, “That’s the one who gave me my kidney”!

My favorite line (out of so many I can’t even count) from ST IV was as the crew (with the fully recovered Spock) were heading out to space dock to get their new ship; Sulu was hoping for one ship, Scotty was asking why on earth he wanted THAT bucket of bolts, and then I believe McCoy said, “The bureaucratic mentality is the only constant in the universe. We’re going to get a freighter” in a disgusted tone and then you see the lights come up on. . .The Enterprise, NCC1701-A.

Right, and the part about McCoy protesting the “drilling a hole in his head” was when he was talking to the 1986 doctors who were going to treat Chekov. No wonder Bones thought he was in the Dark Ages…😃

:yup: 👍

Thanks guys, not seen the movie in 20 years, and my memory fails. I knew Bones said something about drilling a hole in his head, somewhere in the movie.

He gave the lady a pill for a kidney? LOL.

As to the original question, I’m surprised no one’s mentioned the one line from the “no win scenario” scene which I thought most likely to appear on a religious forum. After Saavik has failed the test, she asks Kirk “Any suggestions, Admiral?” and Kirk replies " Prayer, Mr. Saavik, the Klingons don’t take prisoners." I make no apologies for knowing this by heart.😃

BTW, I thought Ricardo Montalban’s performance as Khan was Oscar worthy, but there’s no way they’d ever nominate someone from a Star Trek movie. Patrick Stewart couldn’t even get nominated for an Emmy.

RIP Charlton Heston.
