If I remember correctly, the holiday special aired on CBS. Korman and Arthur were connected to CBS series so the network may have had something to do with it.

Most likely. I can’t imagine how anyone in their right mind would willingly sign up for that.

George Lucas has even said that he wishes he can find all copies of it and smash them with a sledgehammer.

I’m kinda excited for it…but I was so traumatized by the last 3 (sorry, technically the first three) that I’m afraid to put any hope into this one. I know…Darth would find my lack of faith disturbing. But we were sooooo burned!

The only thing that’s keeping me from being hope-less…is the fact that I really liked those JJ Abrams Star Trek movies - and I really hope he doesn’t go overkill on the CGI like the former 3. I’m sick of all this CGI. It just never looks real.

In my house, and hubby knew this at the nascence of our dating life, the “prequels” did not happen. We do not speak of them in our home. The same as (sorry, Scott Bakula) with that “Enterprise” series. Meh.

Preach it sister! I mean look at films like Alien - even if you didn’t like the concept, you have to admit that that movie still LOOKS beautiful to this day. The quality of the sets are amazing. Same with 2001. And I loooove stop-motion - Clash of the Titans (circa Harry Hamlin anyone?)

I read somewhere that Abrams said he is going back to the practical effects of the originals and avoiding CGI. If that’s true it does sound like we might finally get a good Star Wars film again.

So I’m pretty optimistic. We’ll see though.

I guess I’m not a big enough Star Wars fan, but I kind of liked the prequels. I can understand the fact that they have many shortcomings. But overall, I enjoyed them more than I was bothered by the foibles. Maybe I’m just easily impressed by Yoda flipping around all over the place with a lightsaber.

It’s always been kind of funny to me that Star Wars fans seem to have this love/hate relationship with George Lucas. They love the world he created, yet hate many of the choices he made once it was created.

I am looking forward to these new films. First, I like J.J. Abrams. Second, I’m encouraged that Lucas is not in charge, so there shouldn’t be as many of those types of issues. Third, since it is set after the original trilogy, we get to see more of the original cast on screen for the first time in 30+ years.

I guess I’m not a big enough Star Wars fan, but I kind of liked the prequels.

I thought the first one (Phantom Menace) was pretty good, better than it’s given credit for. The plight of Anakin and his mother gave the movie an emotional focus, and the pacing was good and there was a reasonable amount of dramatic tension. But each succeeding entry grew increasingly dreary as the capable boy actor who played Anakin gave way to the statue-like performance of Hayden Christensen and it dealt more and more with his relationship with Princess Amadalia, which I found impossible to care about at all. By the third one a “by-the-numbers” feeling had settled in as if even the people making the movie were bored with it, which is ironic since dramatically speaking, Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader should be the climax of the whole exercise, yet it felt very anti-climactic.

Warning: Extremely Nerdy Rant Incoming

I think the issue was not the movies themselves (they are not horrible movies, I’ve seen worse) but that there were such high expectations for them. I mean really, the story of how Anakin went from the great and noble Jedi Knight that Ben described in A New Hope to evil Sith Lord has so much going for it. It pretty much writes itself. That’s a good story. There was also that vague mention of the Clone Wars by Leia and the whole destruction of the Jedi and rise of the Empire. All good stuff.

But all those things were put off until the last film, and even then they were rushed. The entire Jedi Order gets destroyed in about 45 seconds of screen time, we only get to see the tail end of the Clone Wars, and Anakin’s fall is also rushed. (If you can even call it a fall. I never once felt like this was a good man who got corrupted. Just a moody dude who suddenly decided he was fine murdering the people who raised him. There was barely a struggles. Huge waste.)

Instead we got a LOT of political debate, a forced love story, and wooden characters who just weren’t interesting. Lightsaber battles are cool, but they can’t save a movie. For as good as the choreography is in the Phantom Menace, I still have more fun watching Han, Luke and Leia on the Deathstar than Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fighting that horned dude. You just can’t replace good characters with special effects.

Good points. Now you have me wishing they were better movies. There certainly were a lot of missed opportunities.

Tomarin – you didn’t miss much. Even watching it with the aid of Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy of Rifftrax/MST3K doesn’t help with the mind-numbing pain of the Holiday special. How they managed to make Harvey Korman and Art Carney unfunny should be a crime reserved for prosecution at The Hague.

I always point this out whenever people complain about Rebels (this, along with Droids and Ewoks) being a kids’ show. Anyway, two things are going for Star Wars this year: season 2 of Rebels and Episode 7.
