Star Wars has a LGBT character

Why do you believe that this is evidence of ‘kowtowing to liberal agendas’, rather than a science fiction writer choosing to explore or at least incorporate an aspect of human life that exists now? Deciding to make a supporting character lesbian (or perhaps bisexual) is merely extrapolating from current social reality in a very minor way.
 
For these reasons:
–Original Green Lantern is gay now
–Legend of Korra ended with Korra being gay, if not bi (in a KIDS SHOW, no less!)
–Catwoman is bi (I think)
–Rowling said Dumbledore is gay despite no hints in the story (again in something FOR CHILDREN!)
–Nico in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books is gay (another KIDS BOOK!)
Now, tell me there’s no agenda. Go on, tell me!

Because their sexuality has no impact on the plot. The plot and themes of Star Wars has nothing to do with sex. There are no real romance scenes, etc. And the only purpose for the romantic subplots between Han & Leia and Anakin & Padme are only to allow the Skywalker family to grow.

The sexual orientation of every other character is irrelevant to the story and plot. So why have a gay character?

Star Wars is a major enterprise with a toyline for 38 years. Introducing a gay character into Star Wars is obviously a covert attempt to introduce a “gay toy” to young boys.
 
You can’t catch gay. I know, my best friend in high school was a lesbian! Heck, she still is. My HS softball team was so stereotypical. Half the girls were butch. You know what? I DIDN’T CATCH THE GAY COOTIES! :extrahappy: Amazing, huh?
I even spent the night with my gay teammates and they didn’t pick on me or rape me or anything like that. Crazy, right? 😉
Again, you can’t catch gay.
 
This is just like Rowling announcing, after the Harry Potter series was over, that Headmaster Dumbledore was gay.

This had no point in the plot, but brings a salient social issue into the product line.

But, really, once films are being made, any number of people can modify the characters. And, to be sure, no-one will decide not to see SW7 because of it!

To be precise, it’s an Imperial Moff in the forthcoming Lords of the Sith novel, and apparently her orientation is just ‘there’–it’s not a key part of the plot.

I can’t say I’m thrilled, but the novels skew towards the older fans anyway, and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be used for titillation or to push a “Heroic Victim of Prejudice” narrative.

In fairness, this isn’t the movies – a supporting character in one of the spinoff novels (which IMNAAHO, are mostly bupkes in the quality department when not written by Timothy Zahn, Aaron Allston or Mike Stackpole :p) is going to be written as a lesbian. Knowing that this is Star Wars, and Disney is not going to allow graphic sex, my Star Wars alert level is thus

  • DANGIT, -]LUCAS/-] DISNEY!
  • EVEN JAR-JAR WAS BETTER!
  • MEH, AT LEAST IT’S NOT JAR-JAR
  • ANNOYING, BUT NOT WORTH GETTING HET UP ABOUT
  • HEY, THEY JUST RELEASED ANOTHER “SPECIAL EDITION.” WHY?
  • THEY’RE RELEASING THE THEATRICAL ORIGINAL TRILOGY? SWEET!
Note that the alert level is subject to change if the character becomes a one-note Mary Sue or something.
 
I think its stupid, and dose little more then just ‘Kowtow’ (I think the phrase is) to the pro-gay movement in this day and age. And on gays being part of all kinds of book series and what no, especially aimed at children, How do you spell ‘Propaganda’?

But the point is, unless someone’s sexuality DOES play a part in the plot of a story, why do people feel the need to “through it in there”? Why not introduce a character in a Star Wars book who is an identified masturbator? Because it doesn’t have anything to do with the plot and nor does the sexuality of a character. The author can easily say something like, “Moff Whateverhernameis’ life was almost destroyed after the death of her spouse.”

We need to stop defining people by their sexuality or color of their skin. Let’s focus on their character and what they do. The irony is that the ones who always push for “equality” are usually the ones who continue pushing labels.
 
C3P0 was the first one. Anyone who did not catch on to that has a head in the sand!

It isn’t like star wars hasn’t pushed sexual boundaries before! Luke and Leia shared some pretty incestuous moments. And Bestiality (or the alien equivalent seems to be common.

Come on now, nobody said you can catch gay. 😛

The problem is not even that an increasing number of books, films, tv shows, and games have gay characters.

The problem is that despite this increase, there is literally no presentation of chaste gay characters. Or characters who advocate chastity in this, and other contexts. Gay characters are only ever presented as either sexually coupled, or seeking a partner.

No one said that you can catch gay, but saying that liberal/gay propaganda is seeping into our children’s literature and freaking out about it seems to imply it. If I could go my whole middle school and high school years ( I played on varsity in middle school so I had older gay friends too) with actual gay friends and it didn’t convert me to the V, I doubt silly little fictional characters will.

And you are exactly correct most people and characters do not advocate chastity in any context.

I don’t watch family shows much anymore, but they definitely used to advocate chastity. Given what I saw of Sadie Robertson on DWTS (yes I, a 38 y/o single male watch DWTS), I imagine at least Duck Dynasty does.

On a related note, I was also pleased to see Candace Camerson on DWTS. I had a crush on her back in the DJ Tanner days, and am proud of her refusing to be sexualized.

Woody Allen is dating his ex-wife’s adopted daughter. I can’t wait for the comic book for those situations.
