I remember when they tried to assert that Bert & Ernie were gay.
I remember the studio jumped on that and said that people shouldn’t try to add more into what the show was meant to be.
A kid’s show about making learning fun.

This is just like Rowling announcing, after the Harry Potter series was over, that Headmaster Dumbledore was gay.

This had no point in the plot, but brings a salient social issue into the product line.

But, really, once films are being made, any number of people can modify the characters. And, to be sure, no-one will decide not to see SW7 because of it!

This. When Rowling announced it it was more for social reasons than anything directly relating to the story. I wouldn’t be surprised Lupin was asexual until he met Tonks, and Tonks was woman leaning towards her own sex until she met Lupin.

I have no problems with LGBT characters. But I would like to see chaste characters but not for simply for plot or a Mary Sue character. Even more so, I’d like to see more characters with different disabilities. X-Men is only one that comes to mind and I’m not just referring to the superhero genre.

I think chastity and other virtues are difficult to write well and have characters that are interesting. I think it’s easier to do in a book because a lot of virtue takes place internally; a person struggling with something may not always look like they are struggling, so writers for television and film have to make the character all angsty to make the virtue visible and somewhat interesting.

I used to watch a soap opera and one of the main characters was a woman who was a good person. She was kind, thoughtful, dealt with difficult people with grace, blah blah blah. Every once in a while the writer’s would make her evil; once, she was even possessed.

You should check out the masterpiece mystery series, Granchester. I really like how they portray the main character, who is a young vicar. He definitely falls a few times, but his character very strongly strives for all virtues, including chastity.

I think people mistakenly think that you have to be perfect to preach virtue. Clearly this is not true, life is complicated for everyone.

To be precise, it’s an Imperial Moff in the forthcoming Lords of the Sith novel, and apparently her orientation is just ‘there’–it’s not a key part of the plot.

I can’t say I’m thrilled, but the novels skew towards the older fans anyway, and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be used for titillation or to push a “Heroic Victim of Prejudice” narrative.

I think you’re right, this doesn’t really look like an example of trying to push an agenda to me. Honestly, it looks more like a publicity stunt. The fact that apparently her sexuality is just “there” and not a key plot point only confirms my suspicions. It’s not about furthering the story or adding depth to a character. It’s about making headlines and selling copies. That’s it.

It isn’t like star wars hasn’t pushed sexual boundaries before! Luke and Leia shared some pretty incestuous moments. And Bestiality (or the alien equivalent seems to be common.

Hey well technically Lucas hadn’t decided they were brother and sister when those things happened. That was just a convenient way to resolve the love triangle.

I think people mistakenly think that you have to be perfect to preach virtue. Clearly this is not true, life is complicated for everyone.

People who say “Well you’re not perfect!” when someone is judging (OH NOES JUDGING!) you tells me that person needs to be wrapped in swaddling clothes.

I’m sick of the gay agenda being shoved in my face in all the fandoms I’m part of! Can’t we have stories without writers kowtowing to liberal agendas? As an aspiring writer, I object! And as a Christian nerd too!

To be honest I was more concerned about the corrosive effects upon the minds of children of implicit interspecies sex in Star Wars.
